[edit] Biography Marc Jean Dourojeanni (1941- ) is a Peruvian specialist in Amazon development. He is a pioneer researcher in the fields of forest entomology, wildlife management and protected areas administration and has been a key promoter of the establishment of most Peruvian protected areas during the period 1965-1988 including, among others, Pampa Galeras, Manu, Huascaran, Junín, Paracas, Titicaca, Machu Picchu and Junín. He has been, with Carlos Ponce del Prado and Antonio Brack, a prominent figure of the Peruvian environmental movement during the past fifty years. Biography Born (January 2, 1941) in Paris, France. Natural of Peru and France. Agronomist (Peru, 1963), Forester (Peru, 1965) and Doctor of Sciences (Belgium, 1971). He served as professor and dean of the Faculty of Forestry of the National Agrarian University of La Molina (Lima, Peru) from 1964 to 1988. Also vice rector (1972) of the Universidad San Martin de Porres of Lima and professor of “environment and national defense” at the High Military Studies Center of Peru (1975-1988). He created the chairs of forest entomology, wildlife management and protected areas in Peru and has been a pioneer researcher in these fields. Some of his researches included ambrosia beetles in the Amazon and the first finding of the Australian eucalyptus wood-borer in Peru. His works (with Paul Pierret) about fish and wildlife contributions to the nutrition of local population in the Amazon were the first on this matter in the region. He has been instrumental for the implementation of the Pampa Galeras National Reserve and the national program for the conservation of the vicuna and conducted field studies for the establishment of several protected areas, such as Junín, Machu Picchu, Titicaca among several other. From 1973 to 1979 he served as Director General of the Peruvian Forest and Wildlife Service when most large protected areas were legally established and the forestry legislation was entirely renewed. He served as consultant for the World Bank (1982-1988) being in charge of supervising the environmental aspects of the Rondonia (Brazil) colonization program. In 1988 he became officer of the World Bank, based in Washington, and in 1990 he became the first chief of the newly created Environmental Division of the Inter-American Development Bank. Under his management this division became the largest in the Bank, the environmental lending multiplied in few years and the environmental quality of the operations improved to standard’s equivalent to those of the World Bank. He has been President of the Entomological Society of Peru and the founder with Carlos Ponce and Manuel Ríos (1984) of ProNaturaleza^[1] the largest Peruvian NGO dealing with environmental affairs. He was its first President. In the international scene he has been Vice-president of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Deputy Chairman and Vice-president of the World Commission on Protected Areas and member of the Board of the World Resources Institute (WRI) among many other institutions. He is the author of 14 books (two more are currently in press) and of some 350 articles dealing with Amazon development, protected areas management and natural resources utilization. His services were recognized with several Peruvian and international honors. In 2010 he was nominated Emeritus Professor of his University. He retired in 2002 but continues to be active as consultant in tropical forests of South America, Africa and Asia and in the board of several NGOs of Peru and Brasil.
