Technical Milestones

  • Autonomous Robotics: Member of the grand-prize winning team for the IEEE Spectrum "Amazing Micro-Mouse Maze Contest" (1978–1979).[1][2] I am currently focused on documenting the technical history of the Moonlight Special and its associated navigation algorithms.
  • Real-Time Control Systems Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) (Battelle): The Cartridge Case Manufacturing and Eject System (CCMES) was developed for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, this $12M system utilized a dedicated computer for 100% high-speed inspection (1,200 rounds/min). I served as the sole software engineer for this project in 1977-1979, developing the real-time control and data acquisition code for the Data General Nova. I authored the software-based recalibration routine that used a rotating physical standard to compensate for optical sensor drift on every machine revolution.[3]
  • Real-Time Control Systems Walt Disney Productions: In 1980, I co-authored research with R. David Snyder describing a minicomputer-based system for generating and managing Disney Animatronics show data. This next-generation system, developed for EPCOT Center and Tokyo Disneyland, utilized Data General Eclipse S250 minicomputers for data generation and Data General Nova systems running **RTOS** for real-time playback. The system was designed to synchronize complex animatronics data with audio tracks, and I was responsible for training the Japanese engineering team on its deployment.[4]
  • IBM PC Software Development:

    In 1982, I developed 'Animation Creation', one of the earliest graphics and animation programs for the IBM PC, licensed through my small business, Mouseworks Computing, and published by IBM in 1983. This software used the Color Graphics Adapter (CGA) 255 character set and memory to animate up to eight 24x40 character screens or up to four 24x80 character screens, displayed in sequence. Character color selections included eight background colors and sixteen foreground colors. By changing the positions of objects a little bit from screen to screen the objects appear to move.[6]

  • Secure Networking: In the late 1980s, I developed the Protected Mode executive software for the Boeing Multilevel Secure Local Area Network (MLS LAN) Secure Network Servers, an Independent Research and Development (IR&D) project. This work, presented at the U.S. Army ISEC Technology Strategies '87 conference, explored applying TCSEC (Orange Book) concepts to design networks that "preserve different data sensitivities simultaneously" while protecting against "disclosure, alteration, or loss." A demonstration Secure Network Server, utilizing Intel 80286 microprocessors, was subsequently approved for formal evaluation by the National Computer Security Center (NCSC) in 1988. It was the first network to be evaluated as a candidate A1-MI network component under the NCSC-TG-005 Trusted Network Interpretation (Red Book). I designed and coded the trusted executive kernel in 80286 assembler language, utilizing Protected Mode to enforce Mandatory Access Control (MAC)—a role for which the Boeing MLS LAN is historically recognized. I also authored the project's defining technical tagline: "Not all data are created equal," and proposed the marketing brochure's MLS data isolation prism representation.[7][8]
  • Corporate Internet Access, Security Perimeter and Private Extranet: As manager of the Boeing Global Network Access team in 1995 - 2001 I was responsible for several aspects of corporate network growth and change.

When Boeing dial-in modem bank (Cisco Access Path) user growth became hard to keep up with (55,000 users), I did research and successfully made the case for Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (LT2P) gateway access from much larger network provider modem banks. Soon after that my team evaluated and introduced the first deployment of Virtual Private Network (VPN) gateway servers for Boeing remote access, along with SunScreen packet filter firewalls.

As Boeing use of the Internet expanded quickly, my team contracted for additional bandwidth, starting from a small group of T1 connections in Seattle, Washington to a larger team effort across multiple companies to establish physically diverse and redundant 3-security-perimeter access, each with multiple T3 connections. I authored the request for proposal for the commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP) for this design, which resulted in the selection of AT&T as the Boeing corporate ISP (a longstanding relationship).

I also managed the contract for the Boeing world-wide supplier data network (SITA private extranet) that had a constant rate of change as facility locations and needs changed.
