In this list of investment bankers considered the greatest of all time, many of the following investment bankers have been noted in their industry as particularly influential, prolific, and impactful both within banking and the broader economy. Due to the difficulty of measuring greatness in these individuals and the profession they operate in, multiple metrics and methods are used to identify them as such. Among these include the monetary value of all of the traditional investment banking activity they have generated, the prevalence of corporate institution-building, and the level of notoriety they have amassed throughout their careers. External variables such as inflation and merger and acquisition (M&A) activity further complicate the feasibility of cross-era comparability. Additionally, some of the literature surrounding this topic refer to any number of these individuals with derivative classifications such as "greatest of their generation" or "... in the world".
