Cavo Paradiso is an open-air nightclub located on the island of Mykonos, Greece. Founded in 1993, the venue is situated on a 30-foot cliff face overlooking the Aegean Sea above Paradise Beach. It is recognized for its historical role in expanding Mykonian nightlife outside the traditional old town center and for hosting prominent international electronic dance music artists during the summer tourist season.[1]

History

Origins and early years (1993–1999)

The venue was conceived by local entrepreneur Nikos Daktylidis, who aimed to establish a venue that integrated the island's natural landscape and coastal views, a concept distinct from the indoor establishments typical of Mykonos Town during the 1980s. Construction began in late 1992 and early 1993, converting a traditional shepherd's hut built in 1955—the structural elements of which remain within the modern complex. Daktylidis developed the site alongside family members, constructing a central swimming pool designed in the geographic shape of Mykonos. The venue's name was co-developed with general manager Margarita Antonini.[2]

Cavo Paradiso opened in the summer of 1993 as a daytime cocktail and sunset bar. In July 1994, the venue hosted its first DJ set featuring Italian artists, prompting a shift from a lounge format to a dedicated nightclub. In October 1994, management partnered with the Athens-based promotional team Magna (Manos and Ilias), leading to the club's inaugural electronic music event during Easter 1995. Magna resident DJ Akylla became the first Greek guest artist to perform at the venue, followed by national figures such as George Siras, Petros Floorfiller, Mikele, Mikee, Leon Sega, and Ms Lefki.[2]

By mid-1995, international artists began performing at the venue, including UK DJs Nicky Holloway and Phil Perry, alongside David Morales, who established a long-term residency at the club. Subsequent bookings included members of the Def Mix collective, Frankie Knuckles and Satoshi Tomiie. Due to national statutory regulations requiring nightclubs to close by 2:30 am, Cavo Paradiso restructured its operating model in 1996 to function as an after-hours venue, opening at 5:30 am and continuing events into midday. By the late 1990s, the venue attracted international attendance and hosted artists such as Louie Vega, Paul Oakenfold, Cevin Fisher, Carl Cox, and Erick Morillo, alongside Italian house music artists including Claudio Coccoluto, DJ Ralf, Joe T Vannelli, and Paolo Martini. In late 2000, DJ Mag published a four-page profile documenting the venue's development.[3]

International prominence and operational shifts (2000–2019)

In 2000, management initiated a long-term collaboration with London-based promoter and resident DJ Stathis Lazarides, booking artists from Subliminal Records and the Cosmac agency, including Danny Rampling and CJ Mackintosh. Following amendments to local entertainment zoning laws, the venue reverted to nighttime operations, opening at midnight. On 12 August 2001, John Digweed performed a 12-hour continuous set at the venue, an event widely documented in electronic music media.[4]

In 2002, the core promotional team expanded to include Lorenzo Papachrysanthou and Coolis Calopetris. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, bookings expanded to encompass major figures across House, Techno, and EDM genres, including Armin van Buuren, Tiesto, Paul van Dyk, Richie Hawtin, Marco Carola, Sven Väth, Adam Beyer, Steve Angello, David Guetta, and Cedric Gervais, alongside national artists such as CJ Jeff, Manolako, DJ Freespirit, Valeron, and Heavy G.

Richie Hawtin notably curated label-specific showcases that served as career launchpads for emerging artists.

In the winter of 2009, the venue underwent a comprehensive structural modernization. Upgrades included the installation of a new roof infrastructure, an extended far-end terrace, a redesigned DJ booth, advanced lighting rigs, a Funktion-One sound system, and a dedicated VIP section, transitioning the venue toward a festival-style production scale. During the mid-2010s, infrastructure limitations and regional power supply issues on the island occasionally affected operations, requiring the integration of large-scale backup generators to maintain performances. The decade saw regular headline performances by artists such as Sebastian Ingrosso, Steve Aoki, The Chainsmokers, Alesso, Afrojack, Nicky Romero, Deadmau5, Calvin Harris, Kygo, Loco Dice, Ricardo Villalobos, and Nina Kraviz.

Pandemic adaptations and modern era (2019–present)

In the late 2010s and early 2020s, the venue added contemporary figures to its seasonal roster, including Timmy Trumpet, Meduza, Claptone, Ilario Alicante, Fisher, DJ Snake, Joseph Capriati, Mathame, and Peggy Gou.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Cavo Paradiso was one of the few international large-scale venues to maintain seasonal operations. It hosted limited-capacity, socially distanced events during the summer seasons of 2020 and 2021 in compliance with regional health protocols. During subsequent off-season periods, structural modifications were made to the venue layout: the trademark central swimming pool was permanently covered to extend the main dancefloor, and the DJ booth was relocated closer to the cliff edge, flanked by a newly constructed VIP area and green room. Following the lifting of public health restrictions in 2022, the venue celebrated its 30th consecutive season, introducing artists such as John Summit, Vintage Culture, and Dom Dolla.

Venue design

The venue's architecture features a terraced amphitheater layout constructed from local stone, wood, and raw materials designed to blend into the natural cliffside topography. The open-air complex centers around the expanded main dance floor, oriented directly toward the sea. The sound reinforcement system relies on a high-output Funktion-One configuration integrated with localized acoustic treatments to withstand seaside weather conditions.

Documentary

In 2025, a feature-length documentary film titled Cavo Paradiso – 30 Years of History, directed by Antonis Theocharis Kioukas and produced by Giorgos Remvaltados was released. The film chronicles the venue's structural and cultural evolution from a remote sunset bar accessible only via unpaved roads into a globally recognized venue. The production incorporates archival video footage, behind-the-scenes interviews with technical staff, and commentary from the founders and performing artists. The documentary's premiere received coverage across national Greek television networks and print media, including Kathimerini, Athens Voice, and Mega Channel.[5][6][7]
