Design studies is the academic investigation of the theory, practice, history, and philosophy of design. Within these broad contexts, it focuses heavily on the nature, goals, and capabilities of design. Its scope encompasses not just the various branches of design, but also where they intersect with non-design domains.

Design studies itself is often described in a way that suggests being exterior to design because it is not typically associated with actually making objects or services. Many design studies theorists lack a background in any design discipline, and do not identify as designers themselves for this reason. Anthropology, art history, and philosophy are some fields that have produced many design studies scholars.

In the sense that design itself can be understood as a thing brought into existence by intentional making, design studies may regarded as the designing of design. In this view, the critiques and proposals by design studies theorists are the artifacts meant to get "from existing circumstances to preferred ones."^[1]

A third possible schema for situating design studies with design is as being a common part of every design discipline. Many designers already consciously incorporate design studies considerations into their work, such as when they prioritize sustainability or conduct ethnographic research.
