Autism is a developmental disability stemming from a neurological disorder. Autism affects boys more than girls and is generally seen within the first three years of life. Autism affects the social interaction and communication skills of both adults and children. Individuals generally have difficulties with social interactions, leisure activities, and communication. [1]
In Wisconsin, 1 out of 196 children is diagnosed with autism (2003). [2] Wisconsin has programs put into place to assist families with autistic children. The Wisconsin Early Autism Project (WEAP) is a program designed around Dr. Ivar Lovaas' behavioral treatment. WEAP provides therapeutic treatment based on the program instituted by Dr. Lovaas. The program has seen successful results similar to what Dr. Lovaas sees with his practice. To assist the WEAP in continued services the state of Wisconsin offers funding to children under the age of eight who are diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. This funding is available for up to three years for individuals who qualify. [3]
