A climate of perversion

In her work investigating Australian Special Forces culture, Samantha Crompvoets reported serious allegations concerning conduct in Afghanistan between 2009 and 2013. It was alleged to her that during this period, the SASR unlawfully killed thirty-nine Afghan nationals, in incidents characterised as "competition killing" and driven by blood lust.[1]: vii [2]

In her 2016 report, Special Operations Command (SOCOMD) Culture and Interactions: Insights and Reflections, Crompvoets recounted that a source described 2012 as the worst year, with recurring but uninvestigated reports from an Afghan interpreter that special forces soldiers were executing farmers. Crompvoets had soldiers confide to her that there was a culture where they felt a strong pressure to conform, with some committing atrocities to fit in. Patrol commanders were identified as wielding excessive power, reportedly acting with impunity and beyond the control of their officers.[3]: 16

In 2012 when he returned to Afghanistan after being awarded the Victoria Cross, Roberts-Smith who had long been considered by his peers to be entitled, was untouchable.[3]: 20
