Timothy R. Olsen (born 1984) is an American sports journalist originally from Smithfield, Utah.

Life and Career

Tim Olsen grew up in Smithfield, Utah and attended Utah State University. He graduated in 2009 with a B.S. in journalism and a minor in business. He is currently a graduate student at Syracuse University where he is pursuing a master’s degree in the Magazine, Newspaper and Online journalism program at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. He married Tara Curtis in June 2008.


Olsen's professional career began in 2007 when he worked as an intern for the USU Athletic Department. While there, he was the beat writer for USU's golf team. He also wrote feature articles on athletes which were used for game programs and the Athletic Department's Web site. In October 2007, Olsen joined The Herald Journal in Logan, Utah. as a staff writer where he covered various high school sporting events. Olsen stayed on staff at The Herald Journal until August 2008 when he became assistant sports editor for The Utah Statesman, the campus newspaper for Utah State University. That fall he was the beat writer for the football team and men's basketball team at USU. In December 2008, Olsen was promoted to sports editor where he served until he graduated from USU in December 2009. He also was a contributing writer to the sports section of KSL.com during this time. Following his graduation, Olsen continued to provide content as a freelance writer for both The Herald Journal and The Utah Statesman before moving to Syracuse, New York to continue his education.


Olsen has received multiple awards for his work. In 2009 he was named the "Most Prolific" writer at The Utah Statesman, and he received second place in both the "Personality Profile" and "Sports Reporting" sections from the Utah Society of Professional Journalists. In 2010, Olsen was again recognized by the Utah Society of Professional Journalists as he was awarded first place in the "Personality Profile" section for his story on USU's longtime athletic trainer, Dale Mildenberger. Olsen also received second place in "Sports Reporting" and third place in "Opinion Column" in 2010.
