The roots of the name goes back to old Norwegian, and the first time it is mentioned historically is in one of the old Islandic sagas: Vemundrsaga. It is a very rare name, and Norway is the only country in the world where the name occurs (with a few exceptions of course). The meaning of the name is: Ve = sanctuary; home, and mund from "mundr" Which equals to guardian. The whole name can be translated to: Guardian of the home and is another version of the Norwegian name Vegard About 650 people in the world are carriers of the name. In newer times, it had its latest apex in the middle of the 90's, and according to the statistic, it's still increasing.
