Francis Marion Hudson-author, mathematician and philanthropist. Francis Marion (who went by Frank) was born on September 8th 1935 (died February 22, 2011) and was the only son of Robert Ellis (a local mathematics instructor) and Florence Hudson (a salesperson) of Clarksville, Arkansas. His Great Grandfather Francis Marion Hudson, Sr. fought in the Civil War and migrated west to found the town of Moreland, Arkansas. His grandfather, Francis Marion Hudson Jr. maintained the town grocery in Moreland and was also a Representative to the Arkansas House of Representatives for four terms starting in 1895. Frank Hudson went on get his first degree in mathematics from the University of Arkansas (ASTC at that time) and then went to the University of Texas to receive his Masters degree in 1959 and his PHD in 1964 in Mathematics. He studied at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine and Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts (where he attended with and met “unibomber” Ted Kaczynski ) while on NSF Grants. He later went on to teach at Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado and became professor and chairman of the department of McMurray College in Abilene, Texas (from 1962-1966). In 1967, he became a professor and chairman of the Mathematics department at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway and remained so for the next 17 years. And even remained on as a Mathematics professor until 1998. He co-authored two Mathematics text books with Donald Adlong and continued to edit Mathematics textbooks for others for the rest of his life. He is remembered by his Mathematics scholarship to the University of Central Arkansas in his name and by a Conway, Arkansas neighborhood, “Hudson Cove” named after him and all the streets named after him and his family for all of their Philanthropic work in Conway, Arkansas. Recently his youngest daughter named their hometown jewelry store “Francis M.” in his honor.
