BIOLOGY 597-01 INTRODUCTION TO VIROLOGY

We live in a virus-dominated world! This course will introduce you to the world’s ultimate parasite and arguably the most successful “organism” ever.

We will focus our virology exploration on the molecular biology of virus structure, genomes, replication cycles, mechanisms of infection, pathogenesis, and host defense. In addition, we will investigate the epidemiology of virus infection and methods to prevent or control viral diseases. In other words, we will delve into the underlying biology behind why viruses are so incredibly successful and what this means for the “rest of us” on earth.

LEARNING GOAL: at the end of this course, you will be able to…

Evaluate and communicate the impact that viruses have on you and other life on this planet.

In order to accomplish this goal, you will need to cultivate the following proficiencies, which include the ability to: 1) describe how viruses replicate in cells. 2) explain how viruses interact with the host and how they cause disease. 3) identify, locate, evaluate, and effectively use scientific information.
