Vault Boy is the mascot of the Fallout series. He first appeared in the intro movie of the original Fallout as part of a fictional TV commercial advertising Vault-Tec vaults. He has since become one of the centerpiece of the Fallout series style.
Development
Vault Boy was originally envisioned by Fallout Art Director Leonard Boyarsky. He created and promoted the concept of Vault Boy along with many of the 1950s retro theme of the Fallout series.[1] Not only was the Vault Boy represented as part of in-game marketing for Vault-Tec, he was also created as a caricature that resembled Rich Uncle Pennybags from Monopoly. In the Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics, and Fallout 3, he is featured as part of the game interface in the form of Monopoly-style cards.
Appearance
In full-colored renditions, Vault Boy is a blond male, often smiling and revealing his teeth. His hairs are curly and his sideburns are trimmed. He often wears a yellow-striped blue jumpsuit typical of vault dwellers.
PipBoy confusion
Vault Boy is offend confused with PipBoy, the mascot of an in-game PDA. The is because their difference were never made clear by the artists in the original game. In fact, some of the game developers had mixed them up. PipBoy was modeled after Big Boy.[2]
