About me

I plan on expanding and improving Wikipedia's coverage of Turkey-related topics, especially Turkish culture, which it is sorely lacking in. I also intend to translate article content from Turkish Wikipedia into English.

I'm currently working on the article on the Turkish language. It is a difficult article to improve, and I would appreciate any assistance I can have with it.

I have also worked on the article on Turkish television dramas, from which I have trimmed a great deal of irrelevant content, while giving it better context and fixing its broken English.

Additionally, I have translated (with DeepL), this very short featured article from English into Turkish.

Don't hesitate to contact me over anything.

Also see me on Wiktionary, where I have been active for much longer and have over 1500 edits.

See my essay on what to look out for when using Turkish sources.

Why I edit

I have no desire to inflate Turkey's standing`or reputation on Wikipedia. In fact, I have a strong contempt for Turkish nationalism and nationalism in general. I even find that it is destructive to Turkish culture. It erases Turkish cultural diversity and much critical analysis of it (something I elaborate on in the next section).

Wikipedia has an NPOV problem due to its systemic bias. There are few well-written articles on subjects familiar to Turkish readers; one extremely impressive exception is the thirteen (!) articles on energy in Turkey. As someone familiar with Turkish culture and context, I want to do my part to help rectify this problem.

The sad thing about Turkey

Turkish topics are usually not conducive to having Wikipedia articles written about them due to a severe lack of high-quality sources. Turkey simply does not have a strong intellectual tradition. This is most certainly in part due to many topics having a single sanitized, state-accepted version of the facts. For example, the Armenian genocide is referred to as merely "the events of 1915", and Atatürk is difficult to criticize (unless you're doing it from an Islamic point of view).

"Science" isn't an established thing in Turkey. Whenever a Turkish scientist is mentioned, people love to point out their Turkish heritage because they're seen as exceptional (and implicitly not representative of what Turks are thought to be capable of doing). Similarly, their Turkishness is sometimes cited as the reason for their success, which diminishes their hard work.

Journalism is also severely restricted; just look at the list of arrested journalists in Turkey. Because of this, there are many churnalism outlets who publish unoriginal, routine facts with very little journalistic interpretation or context. Journalism on cultural topics is also virtually nonexistent. Consequently, many talented artists and musicians receive little reliable coverage relative to their renown. Only the most popular artists may receive any Western media coverage.
