Nora Gallery is the first art gallery in Jerusalem and one of the first in Israel. The gallery was founded by Nora (Eleonora) Wilensky and today her daughter Dina Hanoch runs the gallery.

History

The gallery was founded at first in 1942 at the residence of the artist Ludwig Yonas at Mamilla Street (today Agron Street), Jerusalem. Shortly after his death, Nora collaborated with Yonas's wife Lotty, to organize several art exhibitions, among the artists were: Jacob Steinhardt, Marcel Janco, Leopold Krakauer, Jacob Pins, Isidor Ascheim and Miron Sima.

In 1954 the gallery moved to its permanent site, 9 Ben Maimon Av in Jerusalem, which was the home of Nora Wilensky. The original name was "Nora Studio, Art Gallery", but during the years Nora decided to shorten it to "Nora Gallery" or "Nora art Gallery".

The well known Jerusalem Post art critic Meir (Mike) Ronnen wrote on the gallery:

"Nora opened this Rehavia gallery in 1954, but was the doyenne of gallery-owners in the Capital: she had run the Jonas gallery back in 1946, keeping it going for while after that artist's death. Since the fifties, her gallery was a must for Saturday morning Rehavia promenaders... Nora was famed for her flower arrangements as well as for her eclectic taste... Dina has not only kept the gallery open but has inherited her mother's gift for arranging live and dried flowers, still part of the gallery's deliberately homey atmosphere."[1]
"A hub of cultural life in Jerusalem in the early days of the state, this pleasant Rehavia gallery was founded in 1942, making it the oldest gallery in this country still extant; it has been managed for the last decade (traditionally on a basically non-commercial basis) by the founder's daughter, Dina Hanoch, who continues to display her mother's collection while mounting shows by Israeli and European international artists."[2]
