Ms Cousineau,
I was in your July 2013 KDL "What is Wikipedia" class. Want you to know that I am still actively editing -- from quick corrections of spelling or grammar to adding new sections. Your best piece of advice was to be fearless which took me a while to master. Today I created a new article! Your second best piece of advice was to copy & paste any format/info I wish to “borrow.” Thank you.
When I took the class you sent each of your students a list of helpful Wiki links. Highly recommend that you send future students the below Navigation Charts as includes nearly all the links you shared plus many, many more that are helpful to (new) editors.
IMO the page Wikipedia:A primer for newcomers is still a good initial intro which all should read as homework for week 2.
I did keep the links for ‘Wiki Markup' Cheatsheet, Citing Sources and Help Directory as continue to use them frequently. Note that "The Teahouse" is easy access at the top of the Help navigation chart.
Congratulation on your new article! That is a great achievement. Which article is it? Send me the link, if you have a moment.
I'm excited to read that you've continued on with your Wikipedia editing activities - good for you! I hope you are having a fun time being fearless and interacting with this vibrant community.
I really appreciate that you took the time to contact me, and that you sent along those links. I will certainly use them in the future. Keep up the good work, and keep in touch! Ms Cousineau,
It's Fall & I set my books aside to watch TV. The title of my new article is Project Runway: Threads, a new TV show premiering tomorrow. Most pleased that I successfully created an Infobox. Initially my lists of judges and producers was horizontal so I went on a treasure hunt looking at editing of other articles until I found something that works. "Show Preview" gives me confidence to try different things. I added my article to the main "Project Runway" page & to a couple templates & to "List of..." pages.
Always learning. For this response I read about indentation which I've not yet used.
I have found my biggest pet peeve is that articles contain a zillion links to the same page. One could have a full-time job deleting these zillion [].

RE: "I work for the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, and I believe that our holdings should be made available to the public in as many ways as possible."[1] Right on! Thank you for your recent offer of assistance regarding articles relating to President Gerald Ford. The most relevant article I have created relating to the Ford Administration is on Stanley K. Hathaway who briefly served as Secretary of the Interior in President Ford's Cabinet. Any additional updates you can provide to the Hathaway article would be most appreciated. I may have created other articles related to President Ford, but cannot think of any others off the top of my head, so please free feel to peruse the list on my UserPage to identify any other articles you might be able to contribute to. --TommyBoy (talk) 11:11, 18 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2012-11-18T11:11:00.000Z","author":"TommyBoy","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-TommyBoy-2012-11-18T11:11:00.000Z-President_Gerald_Ford-Related_Article_Assistance","replies":[]}}-->

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Roy Ash, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Captain (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Happy New Year, and welcome to a special double issue of Books & Bytes. We've included a retrospective on the changes and progress TWL has seen over the last year, the results of the survey TWL participants completed in December, some of our plans for the future, a second interview with a Wiki Love Libraries coordinator, and more. Here's to 2014 being a year of expansion and innovation for TWL!
The Wikipedia Library completed the first 6 months of its Individual Engagement grant last week. Here's where we are and what we've done:
Increased access to sources: 1500 editors signed up for 3700 free accounts, individually worth over $500,000, with usage increases of 400-600%
Deep networking: Built relationships with Credo, HighBeam, Questia, JSTOR, Cochrane, LexisNexis, EBSCO, New York Times, and OCLC
New pilot projects: Started the Wikipedia Visiting Scholar project to empower university-affiliated Wikipedia researchers
Developed community: Created portal connecting 250 newsletter recipients, 30 library members, 3 volunteer coordinators, and 2 part-time contractors
Tech scoped: Spec'd out a reference tool for linking to full-text sources and established a basis for OAuth integration
Broad outreach: Wrote a feature article for Library Journal's The Digital Shift; presenting at the American Library Association annual meeting
Donations drive: news on TWL's partnership efforts with publishers
Open Access: Feature from Ocaasi on the intersection of the library and the open access movement
American Library Association Midwinter Conference: TWL attended this year in Philadelphia
Royal Society Opens Access To Journals: The UK's venerable Royal Society will give the public (and Wikipedians) full access to two of their journal titles for two days on March 4th and 5th
Going Global: TWL starts work on pilot projects in other language Wikipedias
This is much more involved than I had ever imagined.

Hey, so I see that you would be interested on working to organize people in the Midwest into a group. Barring any sort of change in the last year, would you be still willing to do so? I know that Varnent and Keilana are active in outreach and that sort of thing, so it might not be a bad idea to start moving in that direction to become a user group if you wanted to do so. I know that the process is fairly straightforward, and getting the interest of those involved in the meetups wouldn't be hard to do. Also, Varnent is involved in the Affiliations Committee, so he would be able to help you along should you need it. Hi - sure thing! I'd be happy to help build a group. I'm not a very active as an editor right now, actually doing more IRL teaching Wikipedia editing classes, and trying to build a real world community in my region. There's an active student group at the UnivMich I loosely know, and I've seen others scattered around my state....I guess I don't really know where to start, and don't want to slog it out alone. Do you have a process in mind? How committed are Keilana and Varnent? and really , what is the advantage to having a group, beyond getting some funds and having a conference (which of course would be fabulous!) I agree with what Ktr101 suggested, and now commence with a rant of additional thoughts. :) On the question of my involvement, I would absolutely love to see my area of the USA get a chapter one-day. The basic requirement for a user group is two interested leaders, ideas for activities, and some evidence that there will be others beyond the initial two. Thanks to meta:Wikimedia Midwest page, you already have a place to lay out some ideas for activities, and have evidence there is indeed an interest. What the group is lacking are a few leaders willing to shepherd things along. I am happy to serve as an advisor, similar to what I am doing for Wikimedia LGBT. It presents a conflict of interest for me as a member of the Affiliations Committee to be a contact or leader of a group before our committee. Given my involvement already, I will have to abstain from the AffCom vote, but I prefer for groups I am supporting to be approved without my involvement influencing AffCom's decision. I can set you up as an administrator on the Wikimedia Midwest mailing list - which is basically dormant - if you are interested in getting things moving forward. As to the question about value of user groups, that is a great question. There is some information available at Meta:Wikimedia user groups, but I can share a few highlights/personal favorites. Some of it is the benefit of recognition by a Wikimedia Foundation entity. Having a group approved by AffCom indicates a WMF Board Committee has already screened your group, and will not a requirement for things like funding, certainly adds weight to your requests. Probably the biggest benefit people discuss is use of the Wikimedia trademarks - so permission to use Wikimedia logos on promotional materials, etc. User groups also get their own logo to help with having a "brand" and public identity that is visibly tied to the movement and foundation. It also qualifies the group to attend affiliate meetings, like the conference just held in Berlin, and greater access to WMF resources - like group wiki, recognition in WMF materials, greater access to post on the Wikimedia blog, etc. While funding is not generally a problem, it does make fundraising outside of WMF easier..if that's in the group's plans at some point. Again, some of those things you can get through other means (anyone can request one-time trademark usage), but the user groups are meant to help streamline that process for Wikimedians/Wikipedians interested in a series of organized activities under one group. Given the tech corridors in Chicago and Ann Arbor - plus the already established efforts you indicated (like the Ann Arbor wiki and U of M student group) imply to me that the area is ripe for an organized user group and maybe eventually a chapter with resources to help with efforts in those areas. So the short answer I suppose is that in the technical sense of doing things and the Wikipedia culture, group recognition may not be necessary. However, in the context of the overall Wikimedia movement structure and especially "Meta" or offline work, being a recognized affiliate can make your organizing work easier. We want a large number of successful user groups, and the recognition process is intentionally much easier than it is for chapters and thematic organizations - so I would strongly encourage you to organize a user group if you have any interest in helping getting this project off the ground. :) Thank you for your work already and in advance for anything you are willing to do to advance a Midwest affiliate. --Varnent (talk)(COI)17:53, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2014-04-25T17:53:00.000Z","author":"Varnent","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Varnent-2014-04-25T17:53:00.000Z-Bdcousineau-2014-04-24T11:34:00.000Z","replies":["c-Bdcousineau-2014-04-25T20:16:00.000Z-Varnent-2014-04-25T17:53:00.000Z"]}}-->
Well, I am certainly the least experienced editor on this thread ... so an advisor is essential, Varnent. That said, I think it's important for the movement to have some sort of loose recognized org structure for legitimacy both here and irl. And for boxen! :)
So, yes, set me up on that mailing list, perhaps now is our time, eh? Let me see if any of the UnivMich students are interested; also I have a friend editor who might also be interested in joining up. Ok, everyone, sorry, I have been v remiss about responding to the group. When I think about this offline, I get overwhelmed: too much time, not enough experience in Wikipedia, etc. But then I get excited about growing a community... Hello User:Sadads! What a great project. I'm certain it will help create lots of editors.
I'm actually not a librarian, even though I work at a GLAM. Sadly, I'm not knowledgeable enough to help with with this. However, I do know a librarian who might like to get involved - I'll have her stop by this page and take a look.
I'd love to be involved in a pilot as you suggest, but could not do it where I work. Perhaps my friend user:Chimp1cards and I could team up. Hi Books & Bytes recipients: The Wikipedia Library has been expanding rapidly and we need some help! We currently have 10 signups for free account access open and several more in the works... In order to help with those signups, distribute access codes, and manage accounts we'll need 2-3 more Account Coordinators.
It takes about an hour to get up and running and then only takes a couple hours per week, flexible depending upon your schedule and routine. If you're interested in helping out, please drop a note in the next week at my talk page or shoot me an email at: jorlowitzgmail.com. Hello Books & Bytes subscribers. There is a new Visual Editor reference feature in development called Citoid. It is designed to "auto-fill" references using a URL or DOI. We would really appreciate you testing whether TWL partners' references work in Citoid. Sharing your results will help the developers fix bugs and improve the system. If you have a few minutes, please visit the testing page for simple instructions on how to try this new tool. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
