I am not sure if you can help me. I am looking for a couple of people to help me complete User:Sportsfan5000/Adam Windsor - I have been advised by am administrator that I should try and find a couple of good people to colaborate on this article with me as it had been deleted before. "Early years" is just something i've used for years after I saw a few editors use it. I believe User:Eagles247 and User:Giants27 still use it. I don't think there has been a formal discussion about it. Personally I just think it makes sense to say "early years" since info in that section is not always about high school. For example on DeCastro's page it says he is of South African decent which has really nothing to do with high school. I'll admit it was a pretty petty edit on my part.--Yankees10 21:52, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Bender, I just stumbled across this discussion by accident. Part of the logic for calling this section "early years" is that we need a convenient place to state the subject's birthplace, which clearly has nothing to do with calling the section "high school career." (Per WP:MOS, the birthplace is not supposed to appear in the birth date parenthetical in the lead sentence.) To my way of thinking, there is a somewhat serious question whether a high school athlete's participation in amateur high school sports should be termed a "career." The section is also a logical and natural place to stick personal and family background, rather than creating a separate one or two-sentence section called "personal" or some such thing illogically and non-chronologically placed at the end of the article. Usually, placing most early years personal background in an "early years" section helps to maintain the preferred chronological flow of the article. There is no magic to using the words "early life" or "early years," but "high school career" or "high school years" is generally not broad enough to cover all of the information in a well-written sports bio. Sourced opinion is still opinion and does not belong in articles. Even if it did, your edit claims "many" yet you provide only one reference. You are welcome to initiate a BRD discussion on the merits, but the fact of the matter is that Claiborne is a former, not current, LSU player, and that he is a prospect in the draft. You claim your reference is sourced, however, it is still a reference to an opinion, just like a reference to whether Howard Stern likes cherry ice cream in a blog is sourced, and is not permissible. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dkendr (talk • contribs)

This is, of course, wrong. Wikipedia includes thousands of opinions (rather than just facts). Let me name some examples: the description on Citizen Kane includes "many film critics consider Citizen Kane to be the greatest film ever made", which obviously is an opinion, not a fact derived from research. The biographical article of John Maynard Keynes includes "Keynes is widely considered [...] to be the most influential economist of the 20th century," which, again, is an opinion, not a fact. His Cowboys bio. Also, on many articles on DallasNews and ESPN he is called Calloway, as well as in the Lions 2011 media guide on NFL.com. Regarding your recent Edit Warring over this - you can't cherry pick a handful of sources while ignoring others and assume it was "somewhere between 1928 and 32", especially when one of these same sources states he testified before the Senate, saying he was born in 1933, and there is other speculation (from The Devil and Sonny Liston) of arrest records showing it as early as 1927. In the future, please refrain from inserting a random date range based on your own original research. Remember that this is an encyclopedia. Let's try to avoid printing speculations and/or our own snythesis of published material to reach or imply a conclusion not explicitly stated by any of the sources (WP:SYN). Then, please, expand the range to 1927-1930. It's just outright stupid to label his DOB "unknown", because it is not totally unknown. We can, for example, say with 100% certainty that he was not born in 1850, or 1960. I came to see the reply in the message just above, but I thought it would be good to comment here. Bender is correct in using "circa". Not sure on the date you should use, but saying something like born 1927-1933 or just saying c. 1930 are appropriate. Whatever the dates, go with what the various sources list.

So Bender you have a complete list of reliable sources for Sonny Liston's possible birth years? You state "the range is known" in your edit summary and yet just a few hours ago, you were using sources for 1928 to 1932 without actually having read the secondary sources you were quoting and were completely unaware of the source claiming evidence that it could be 1927. It's not only inappropriate to quote sources without having actually read them, but it's also inappropriate to force edits without reaching a consensus. Note that you've been reverted by multiple editors in this case, and there already exists a discussion on the Talk page[2].

User talk:Bgwhite "Circa" may not be correct here because the dates will always be original research "Do not combine material from multiple sources to reach or imply a conclusion not explicitly stated by any of the sources." Because one source says it could be 1928 or 1932 and another says 1927, and a third says it might be 1933 does not make Liston's date of of birth between 1927 and 1933.

I tried to articulate my point, but you wouldn't listen. There is simply a difference between saying someone "was born sometime between X and Y", and "completely unknown". I was listening, but in my opinion the range of dates that was added was simply not accurate or complete which didn't make them suitable for inclusion into the article without a consensus. He was born somewhere between 1928 and 32 is wrong and is your own original research (as was proven).

Remember you reverted two different editors without discussing your changes on the article talk page (you actually removed the note which specifically asked you to achieve consensus on the talk page before changing the date from "Unknown".[4]). Bender, I think you are being too hard on Yankees. Yankees, you also reverted multiple times without leaving a note on Bender's talk page. Both you have some blame in the matter. However, if Yankees is in reference to New York, well Yankees had it coming :). A range of birth dates is known and saying "unknown" is simply wrong. Ultimately I felt that Bender was going against a previous consensus (hence the note for other editors that was placed in the article at the time). As TheShadowCrow had already reverted him citing that note[5], continued insistence of going against the previously established consensus warranted reverting 3 times (3RR is not more than 3 in 24 hours). I would still argue that Unknown is not wrong, as technically even the range of Liston's possible birth years is up for serious debate, however circa or c.1932 or c. 1930 or c.1928 is preferable. I did your technical move request, Asia Muhammed -> Asia Muhammad, based on the LA Times article giving the -ad spelling of her name, which agrees with how she spells her name in her Twitter account. The name 'Muhammed' still occurs in the article. Do you want to try fixing those spellings, if it's justified? I see that a couple of sources still use the -ed spelling. Dear Bender235,

According to the history of the page about Fürstenberg's proof of the infinitude of primes you introduced the umlaut into title of the page.

Unfortunately I must request you to reverse this change and to remove the umlaut from Furstenburg's name throughout the article. The reason for this is that Furstenburg does not use the umlaut in his name. I believe that his family did use the umlaut in the past (and it is certainly the standard spelling in Germany), but he has used Furstenburg without the umlaut in all of his mathematical publications, in particular in the article which contains his proof of the infinitude of primes.

Hey, Bender. Can you double-check the status of Barrett Jones as an undrafted free agent? He was a junior during the 2011 football season, and he still had a year of remaining NCAA eligibility. Moreover, the 2012 NFL Draft Wikipedia article does not list him as an eligible underclassmen for the 2012 draft. Am I missing something here? If they won an international title, the case is clear, but sometimes they "only" held some record. Davonte Stewart and Aaron Ernest are similar cases, which I already created. I made a slight grammar edit to the summary section of Stipe Miocic's wikipedia. The edit in question is: from "an Croatian American" to "a Croatian American" only to receive a warning for what i perceived to be a warranted correction.

Prior to my edit i came across a very odd thing: A argument in the edit section. I screen captioned this and uploaded it to [6](reddit) due to its rarity.

At the time of the edit i was unregistered but decided to register an account in order to dispute this.

I noticed that your post to MediaWiki talk:Spam-blacklist got picked up by the edit filter. To answer your question, it is a browser plug-in gone crazy. Some kind of adware/malware that editors are not aware that they have installed. It appears to be a part of the AdMedia/intextual.com network. "NBA champion" is correct. "NBA Finals" is a specific event, and "NBA Most Valuable Player" is a specific award. But "NBA champion" is just a description. The entire premise of Wikipedia is to provide accurate, and up-to-date information using a reliable source. At present (prior to the start of the season), the Minnesota Vikings should know the actual weight of their players -- certainly their #1 draft pick -- more accurately than what the NFL lists as a weight seen months ago at the combine. It is the most current information, and should be reported as such. If an NFL player dies, do we have to wait until NFL.com reports it to update the players status? I don't think so..

Yes, we use the most current information. But in case of conflicting information, we have to choose the more trustworthy source. Because what tells you that the Vikings page meassurement is more accurate? Per rule of thumb, we use NFL.com data for football players, ALL football players. And NBA.com data for basketball players. Since the arrest has caused the young man to be suspended for at least one game, and possibly face more disciplinary action by the team and/or the NCAA it just seemed a better "fit" under career.
