If dates are supposed to be written a specific way (like here) maybe there should be a phabricator ticket filed somewhere to prevent the cite web template from doing it the wrong way? I figured I'd ask before filing one myself because you probably know way more about this niche area than I do. @Clovermoss -- thanks for pointing this out. I'm curious about why it's important that material inside a template needs to be formatted in a standardized way, given that the template renders the date the same way regardless of how it is typed into the template. @GiantSnowman, could you explain this a bit?
I'm also pinging @PPelberg (WMF), whose work on Edit Check right now is relevant. Howdy! If folks are required to write {{Cite web}} dates in a certain way, then you should probably track down whatever script made the first edit (the diff above is the second edit), then fix it there. However I agree with Marshall that I am not sure {{Cite web}} dates are required to be written a certain way.
Honestly you could make the opposite argument here too: that edits like these violate WP:COSMETICBOT and should not be made. If you want to keep digging into this, should probably find out exactly what part of MOS:NUM they violate. Although this may not be worth pursuing.
