The first stable release of MediaWiki 1.21 for sites outside Wikimedia was published on May 25. [4]
The tool storing information about languages (CLDR) was updated to the latest version (23.1). [5]

The new interface for account creation and log-in is now the default on 30 wikis, including the English Wikipedia, Commons, Meta, and Wikidata. The feature will be added to all wikis after June 5. Users can return to the old look by adding ?useNew=0 to the web address. [19]
Videos are now played in pop-up windows if their size on the page is smaller than 200 pixels (800 pixels on the English Wikipedia). [20]
Opening your talk page now marks notifications as read, for wikis using the Notifications feature. (bug 47912) [21].
All autoconfirmed users can now reset transcoding of video files; previously only administrators could do this. [22]

Future software changes
The PostEdit feature is now part of MediaWiki, and will work on all wikis. (bug 48726) [24]
MediaWiki will now be updated every week, starting on June 6. Thanks to this, bugs will be fixed and features will be added faster than they are now. [26]
Every morning I watch BBC World New with anchor Geeta Guru-Murthy. I tried to look up this news anchor who relays the news for one of the most reputable news sources in the world but found that someone had deleted her page. Since this appears to be you, I'm writing to demand that you correct this stupid mistake. And next time you decide to delete a page for lack of relevance, make sure it's really irrelevant.
What the hell makes you so special that you can judge the BBC News Anchor as unworthy of having a wiki page?
UTRS Account Request
I confirm that I have requested an account on the UTRS tool. Legoktm (talk)

Thanks. I removed the link to m:Template:target since that one is constructed differently and might confused people. Do you think it makes sense to include the target wiki feature even though it's disabled on enwiki? Legoktm (talk) 01:24, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) If it is not enabled on enwiki, it should not be on the Help:Magic words page for the enwiki. Including such an item is just confusing for people looking at a Help page. At an absolute minimum, it should include an note stating that it is not enabled on enwiki. Don't make it harder for someone who is already looking at a help page for ... you know help ... to figure out what is going on.
Without the above message from Legoktm, I might have spent considerable time trying it out to eventually determine that it was not enabled. For this specific functionality, I would not have spent that time as it is not something I am currently interested in, but someone else might. If it is known not to work on enwiki, an enwiki Help page should not include it as something that can be used. Makyen (talk) 07:27, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
Err, you misunderstood my comment. The target parserfunction is enabled on enwiki, there are plenty of pages using it, but the remote wiki parameter is not enabled. Legoktm (talk) 07:32, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for the clarification. I should have read your original comment with more diligence. However, I still stand by the gist of what I was attempting to say. As I now understand it, on the enwiki it is:
{{#target: noticeboard }}
If that is the case would not the following be appropriate for the text:
{{#target: noticeboard }} - used with the MassMessage extension; see also mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage, which shows an additional option to specify another wiki on which the post is made. However, the ability to post to another wiki is disabled on the English Wikipedia.
Given that we are sending users interested in more information to a different page, we should sate that some functionality covered on that page is disabled on enwiki. This is particularly true as that page explicitly shows an example with en.wikipedia.org as the target. Makyen (talk) 08:08, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

For about 20 minutes on January 9, there were problems with CSS and JavaScript due to high server load.
Future software changes

VisualEditor news
In the toolbar, the menu to edit the styles (like bold, italic, etc.) now has a down arrow (). The order of the Insert menu has also changed a little.
You can now edit <gallery /> tags with a very basic tool. [71]
You can now see a help page about keyboard shortcuts in the page menu. [72]
When you change categories, you will now see them when you save the page. [73]
When you edit templates, you will now see the parameters in the right order. The ones that you must add have a star (*). [74][75]
The page will now be saved faster, thanks to a new way of coding the text that sends 40% less text to the servers. [76]
There was a problem with search on the English and German Wikipedias between January 6 and January 14. You could not see new pages and changes in search results. [78]
There were "pool timeouts" errors on several wikis on January 13; it was caused by a code change that was made to fix another problem. [79]
On January 17, Bugzilla and Wikimedia Labs were broken for about 20 minutes due to network problems. IRC channels with recent changes (irc.wikimedia.org) were broken for about two hours. [80]
Future software changes
If you have removed JavaScript in your web browser, you will soon be able to see the orange bar saying that you have new messages. If you have changed how the bar looks with a gadget, you may need to change the gadget again. [81][82]

Recent software changes
Pages from Wikimedia sites now load faster in your browser thanks to "module storage", a way for your browser to save data like JavaScript and CSS on your computer to avoid downloading them again. See video. [87]
The code used to show videos has changed. You should be able to play the video on the page, with the play button on top of the video. If you see the play button on the right of the video, or if clicking on the video leads you to the original file, please file a bug or tell User:Bawolff. [88]
The Special:ActiveUsers page will be removed because it's too slow. [89]
The latest version of MediaWiki (1.23wmf11) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on January 16. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on January 28, and all Wikipedia wikis on January 30 (calendar).
Problems
On January 21, Universal Language Selector was turned off on all Wikimedia sites because it makes pages load slowly. If you want to use web fonts, or write in scripts that aren't on your keyboard, you need to add it as an option in your preferences. It will be turned back on when the issues are resolved. [90]
For about 20 minutes on the same day, there were problems with CSS and JavaScript due to high server load.
Future software changes
You can give comments about the new version of "Winter", a proposal to have a fixed toolbar at the top of wiki pages. [91]
All URLs of the form http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/... and http://www.haaretz.co.il/hasen/... are obsolete.
All URLs of the form http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/... continue with pages/... or spages/... (but I don't know this for sure).
Some such haaretz.com URLs are dead and redirect to the Haaretz home page, http://www.haaretz.com/.
Most such haaretz.com URLs automatically redirect to current haaretz.com pages.
All such haaretz.co.il URLs are dead. They won't redirect, but some will if .co.il is replaced with .com.
there are over 2,000 English Wikipedia articles with links of these types.
I request a bot that reviews articles and looks for links of the form
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/...
and for each such link, it activates that link, and
if redirected to the haaretz home page, add a {{dead link|date=...}} after the link (either the closing right bracket or the closing double brace of {{cite ... }})
if redirected to any other page, replace the link with the redirected link.
In either case, it should save the article with an appropriate edit summary.
It should also look for links of the form
http://www.haaretz.co.il/hasen/...
and for each such link, it should change haaretz.co.il to haaretz.com, activate the link, and act as noted above.
Once this is done, it needs to be run only once on the main article space. It shouldn't be needed again because Haaretz changed its URL format years ago and it is unlikely that old-style Haaretz URLs will be added into Wikipedia articles in the future. —Anomalocaris (talk) 22:37, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
