attention vs attentions
Hello Masato- I'm curious to know why you prefer the plural in this passage. Eric talk 13:04, 17 August 2026 (UTC)
- "Jeanne was a beautiful blonde with thick ringlets and almond-shaped blue eyes." The strong implication of the section is that she was sent away because la Garde's two married sons were becoming over-interested in her romantically or sexually (see the source for this paragraph, Haslip, https://archive.org/details/madamedubarrywag00hasl/mode/2up?q=Garde which mentions allegations of "improper relations with the two young masters"). 'attentions' is appropriate here, meaning "acts of consideration, courtesy, devotion or gallantry indicating affection, love or courtship" (see https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/attentions and other dictionaries). 'attention' singular simply means "notice, thought or interest". In fact, the source uses 'attentions' six times elsewhere in her book: https://archive.org/details/madamedubarrywag00hasl/mode/2up?q=attentions I suspect there might be a subtle difference between US and British English, but the article uses British English and Joan Haslip is a Brit.
