Wikipedia:Userboxes/Music/Proficiency/Adding

This page describes how to add a new instrument to Category:Wikipedians by musical instrument. To complete the task with zero red links, you must create 5 categories and 5 templates. The following example deals with the organ.

The main category

Create Category:Wikipedian ist, replacing ist with the name that is used to refer to people who play the specific instrument. See Category:Wikipedians by musical instrument for previous naming conventions. Insert code in the following format, changing the two parameter values:

 • instrument-code is the abbreviation that appears on the left side of the userbox. Please try to avoid using instrument codes which should be used for a language under the ISO 639 designation system. The language system should take precedence over spin-off systems where code clashes are likely to occur.
 • instrument-name is the name of the instrument, linked to the article about the instrument.

The following will appear at the top of the category: a box and an alphabetical table of contents:

orgThese users play the organ.

4 level-specific subcategories

In the previous step, you created Category:Wikipedian ist. Now, create the following 4 subcategories:

 • Category:Wikipedian ist-1
 • Category:Wikipedian ist-2
 • Category:Wikipedian ist-3
 • Category:Wikipedian ist-4

For the first subcategory, insert the following code, replacing the parameter values as in the first step:

 • ist is in singular form here.
 • level is the skill level, one of 1, 2, 3, or 4. All 4 subcategories have the exact same code except for their level.

After creation, this box will appear in the subcategory:

org-1These users play the organ at a novice level.

4 level-specific templates

For each of the subcategories that you've just made, create the corresponding templates at the following locations:

 • Template:User ist-1
 • Template:User ist-2
 • Template:User ist-3
 • Template:User ist-4

The code is the almost same as above:

This is what the userbox will look like when people put them on their user pages.

org-1This user is a novice organist.

The general template

This final template allows a user to say that he or she plays an instrument without specifying the skill level. Create it at Template:User ist.

organThis user plays the organ.

Spread the word

People can now use these templates. To make them known, list them at Wikipedia:Instruments using Instrument.
