There is a discussion here regarding the relation between Burj Khalifa's height (828 metres) and the birthday of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (28 August) when written in US date format (8-28).

  • Rbbloom is of the opinion that this connection is by no means a coincidence
  • Golbez, Astronaut, Canada Jack and myself believe that the connection is ridiculous and that unless confirmed by an arhitect, it cannot be assumed to be there.

Opinions on this would be appreciated, preferably here. Particularly since the only reference we have so far [1] (not a great reference I admit but not too bad) only mentions the fact that 8 is a lucky number in Chinese, which seemed to me much more likely even before I found the reference (well it was the reason I found the reference). In binary, 9 is 1001. So, 9 1 1 is 1001 1 1. Four 1s. Multiplied by 2 (the '2' in 828 meters) gives us 8. This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:55, 22 January 2010 (UTC)__DTREPLYBUTTONSCONTENT__-->__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2010-01-22T03:55:00.000Z","author":"CBM","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-CBM-2010-01-22T03:55:00.000Z-WP_1.0_bot_announcement","replies":[]}}-->

The CTBUH uses 3 height criteria to measure skyscrapers. From the CTBUH FAQ page:

If the Sears Tower places a big pole on top of the building and calls it art, does that make it the tallest building in the world again? It seems that anyone can put a huge spire on top of building and make it the tallest in the world.
This issue is a long standing argument and one of the reasons the Council recognizes tall building height in three categories:
1. Height to Architectural Top
2. Highest Occupied Floor
3. Height to Tip
However, it is "Height to Architectural Top" that is the most widely utilized and is used to define the rankings of the 100 Tallest Buildings in the World. For this, height is measured from the level of the lowest, significant, open-air, pedestrian entrance to the architectural top of the building, including spires, but not including antennae, signage, flag poles or other functional-technical equipment. The late Dr. Fazlur Khan, who was the original engineer of the Sears Tower and also a former Chairman of the CTBUH, was involved in writing these definitions. He always reported the Sears Tower to be 1,450 ft high. As far as the antenna supports, Dr. Khan never reported them. The CTBUH Height Committee meets regularly to keep on top of this debate and to discuss how increasingly common non-orthogonal and sculptural skyscrapers are impacting on how tall buildings should be measured and categorized.

The {{Infobox skyscraper}} has three parameters described as follows:

  • antenna_spire - the height from the main entrance to the top of the spire or antenna
  • roof - the height from the main entrance to the roof
  • top_floor - the height from the main entrance to the top floor

I assume the correspondance between these is as follow:

  • antenna_spire = "Height to Tip"
  • roof = "Height to Architectural Top"
  • top_floor = "Highest Occupied Floor"

...but is that actually the case and shouldn't the template documentation reflect this? My first reaction on seeing the name "Gerald Ratner": it must be "...total crap" :-) Anyway, some more constructive advice... how about creating a new category Category:Suspension structures? It could be populated with the Athletics Center, Terminal 3 of King Abdulaziz International Airport and |I'm sure other examples can be found as well, and perhaps suspension bridges could be added as a sub-category. Unfortunately, I don't know how to go about creating a new category, but the help desk is the place to go ask that question. The {{Infobox skyscraper}} template contains the previous_building and surpassed_by_building parameters which are related to succession of record height (though they're not mentioned in the template's documentation). On the Burj Khalifa article, the previous_building parameter was set to CN Tower, but this recent edit changed it to Taipei 101. I can see what the editor intended with that edit, the succession boxes at the end of the article say the previous world's tallest building was Taipei 101, but the succession boxes also say the previous world's tallest freestanding structure is the CN Tower. Should the previous_building and surpassed_by_building parameters be used just for buildings or for structures, and if so which kinds of structures? Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Skyscraper articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Sunday, November 14th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of November, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

If you have already provided feedback, we deeply appreciate it. I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). See the tool's wiki page, this project's listing in one big table or by categories and the index of WikiProjects. Selected skyscrpers

This article contains a list of selected' skyscrapers, via the use of Template:Chicago_Skyscrapers, there is no obvious selection criteria, and it looks like WP:OR and it fails WP:V. This is enough to derail an otherwise fine article in the FA candidacy process via WP:FA Criteria 1c. If anyone knows the selection criteria, could it be made a little more obvious for the reader. People should understand that sometimes building lists should not be there at all. I've changed some to not go down so far because once you get to around the 80 meter zone emporis drops off and goes by floors often. One case is the Jade Beach in Sunny Isles Beach. It has an almost twin tower that's nearly the same height but the height is not known on emporis; so there can't be a List of tallest buildings in Sunny Isles Beach. Daniel Christensen (talk) 04:11, 25 November 2010 (UTC) Jade Ocean is the name of it; not to mention they're all residential condos there anyway so they're less covered. It would be like making a list of tallest buildings in Myrtle Beach. It would be a bunch of 50 way ties between thousands of hotels. this is the 1,846th tallest building in a broader area, two years ago

All the "xy tallest building in the US" things need to be deleted, except for on the tallest buildings; they are always out of date, often by 10 or more rankings, having not been changed since the article was made. It's like that on absolutely every list of tallest article; even on the big ones like List of tallest buildings in Chicago, for which, for now, I removed the featured template. For building pages: they should say "it is among the tallest buildings in [it's city]. When all of those "great" featured lists were made, the main editor obviously wanted to get the list featured and thought it would be good to list the rankings of each building in some other list sometimes nearly to 100. I agree with Daniel's assessment. It strikes me as a maintenance nightmare to have "... is the x-th tallest building" or whatever in many articles. Such things get to be out of date and it is a real problem revisiting each and every instance to address a potential update. FWIW, it is even worse when an article about a proposed/under construction building says it will be the y-th tallest on completion. Such statements do not take into account other projects also under construction, delays, new project announcements, and so on. I usually remove such statements on sight or reword them as Daniels suggests. However, for buildings that have been the tallest in some category, it is usefule to say something like it "... was the tallest in the world until surpassed by ...". But what I said earlier about emporis and all the lists of tallest is true, too. With the Sunny Isles Beach thing, for exmple, we're talking about an over 150 meter (170-180) building that's not listed. This makes the List of tallest buildings in Florida inaccurate, too.
