Panda Ya Ya (August 3, 2000—) is a female panda who once lived at the Memphis Zoo and returned to China on a freight plane on April 27, 2023.[1] Ya Ya suffers from hair loss caused by chronic Demodex ailuropodae. This condition changes seasonally and is affected by hormonal fluctuations.[2]

Experience

Panda Ya Ya was born in Beijing Zoo on August 3, 2000.In April 1999, Memphis Zoo in Tennessee signed an agreement with the China Zoo Association to borrow two pandas from China.Ya Ya and another panda, Lele, arrive at Memphis Zoo on April 7, 2003.In 2013, after a 10-year deal expired, the two countries extended the lease for another 10 years until April 2023.In December 2022, Memphis Zoo announced the return of Ya Ya and Lele to China, ending a 20-year lease.[3]

According to the China Zoo Association, Ya Ya's tooth condition is very good for her age and her chewing ability is good. Immediately upon arrival at the Memphis Zoo, Ya Ya's hair was found to be different from that of other pandas.[4][5], and a skin scraper was conducted to examine Ya Ya's mother for mite skin disease, but no mites were found. In 2006, Memphis Zoo staff negotiated with Beijing  panda experts to treat her with anti-parasitic drugs for four months, but the condition remained the same. Since then, she has had a skin scraping test every year, and no parasites have been detected. In the March 2014 examination, the skin scraper found a demodex , again with anti-parasite medication, after treatment the skin still did not improve, but after many years of examination did not detect the demodex.[2]

On June 9, 2021, the China Zoo Association organized an evaluation of Ya Ya's health at the Chengdu Panda Breeding Research Base [zh], the China Panda Conservation Research Center and Beijing Zoo.The results showed that the color of the skin was dry and rusty all over the body, local hair was uneven, and there was infection with demodex. No abnormalities in oral mucosa color, teeth, normal eyes and nose, sharp fingernails, blood biochemical indexes, liver and kidney functions.[6]

In February 2023, due to the death of fellow  panda Lele, Ya Ya health has also been concerned by mainland Chinese netizens, some netizens called for  "Ya Ya" to quickly return home.Beijing Zoo said it had made full preparations for the panda's return to China, which will return on April 7, 2023.[7]The team inspected the panda's health condition and examined its physical examination report and monthly health report. The assessment concluded that besides hair loss caused by skin disease, Ya Ya had good appetite, normal faecal characteristics and stable weight. China has issued import licenses and quarantine permits, identified quarantine sites and made relevant preparations.[8]

The cargo plane carrying Ya Ya took off from Memphis International Airport at 12:00 p.m. on April 26, 2023, and landed at Shanghai Pudong Airport at 16:24 p.m. on April 27, Beijing time.[9][10] On May 29, at 0:43, Ya Ya returned to the Giant Panda House of the Beijing Zoo.[11]
