David Patrick Kelly est né à Détroit, fils de Margaret Kelly (1915-2010) et de Robert Corby Kelly Sr.
Il est surtout connu pour avoir incarné des personnages antipathiques, comme le chef de gang Luther dans Les Guerriers de la nuit (1979), ou Sully, un mercenaire exerçant un chantage sur Arnold Schwarzenegger dans le film Commando de 1986.
