Santa Claus est à peu près l'équivalent du Père Noël en France, malgré leur différence de costume : Santa Claus a une veste et un bonnet rouges, originellement verts, alors que le Père Noël français a une grande houppelande rouge avec une capuche ; saint Nicolas, évêque, a l'habit ecclésiastique de sa fonction, avec la crosse et la mitre, éléments de costume que ne porte pas Santa Claus. En outre, la fête de Santa Claus est la Saint-Nicolas, le soit 19 jours avant la fête de Noël.
