FDAは、ホスファチジルセリンに「限定的健康強調表示 (qualified health claim)」の地位を与えている。これによって、「ホスファチジルセリンの摂取は高齢者の認知症のリスクを低減するかもしれない」、「ホスファチジルセリンの摂取は高齢者の認知機能障害のリスクを低減するかもしれない」といった内容を、「ごく限られた・予備的な科学研究がホスファチジルセリンが高齢者の認知機能障害のリスクを低減するかもしれないことを示唆しています。FDAはこの主張を支持する科学的証拠はほとんど存在しないと結論付けています」との免責条項付きで表示することが許可されている[8]。
