1977年、米国・NIHの国立歯科・頭蓋顔面研究所のジョージ・マーチン(G. R. Martin)らが端緒をつかんだ。マウス皮下に移植可能なEHS肉腫(イーエイチエスと読む。Engelbreth-Holm-Swarm sarcoma)が、大量に基底膜成分を合成する珍しい肉腫であることを見つけたのだ[2]。マウス1匹あたり、湿重量で5~15gのEHS肉腫が得られる。後でわかることだが、ラミニン精製のためなら、凍結保存もできた。
