《Anthology 3》은 비틀즈의 컴필레이션 음반으로, 1996년 10월 28일, 애플 레코드가 《비틀즈 앤솔로지》 시리즈의 일부로 발매했다. 이 음반에는 《The Beatles》(이하 《White Album》)의 초기 세션부터 1969년과 1970년 초의 《Let It Be》와 《Abbey Road》의 마지막 세션에 이르기까지 밴드의 마지막 3년 동안의 다양한 곡과 대체 곡들이 수록되어 있다. 이 음반은 《Anthology 1》, 《Anthology 2》, 《Anthology 4》와 함께 4부작 음반 시리즈 가운데 세 번째 작품으로, 모두 텔레비전 특집 프로그램 《비틀즈 앤솔로지》와 연계하여 제작되었다.

이 음반은 미국 음반 산업 협회로부터 트리플 플래티넘 인증을 받았다. 또한 빌보드 200 차트에서 1위를 기록한 비틀즈의 세 번째 연속 더블 음반이 되었으며, 이는 1970년대 도나 서머가 세운 기록과 동률을 이룬 것이다.

《Anthology》 시리즈 음반들은 리마스터링 작업을 거쳐 2011년 6월 14일, 아이튠즈 스토어를 통해 디지털 음원으로 발매되었으며, 개별 음반뿐만 아니라 《Anthology Collection》 박스 세트의 일부로도 제공되었다.

내용

《Anthology 1》의 〈Free as a Bird〉와 《Anthology 2》의 〈Real Love〉에 이어, 세 번째 존 레논의 솔로 데모인 〈Now and Then〉 역시 《Anthology 3》를 위해 살아남은 세 명의 비틀즈 멤버인 조지 해리슨, 폴 매카트니, 링고 스타에 의해 재작업될 예정이었다. 그러나 해리슨이 녹음 품질을 마음에 들어 하지 않았기 때문에 이 프로젝트는 보류되었다. 이후 매카트니는 해리슨이 레논의 데모 녹음을 두고 “빌어먹을 쓰레기”라고 말했다고 회고하였다.[8] 매카트니는 1997년 《Q》와의 인터뷰에서 “조지는 그 곡을 좋아하지 않았다. 비틀즈는 민주주의 방식으로 운영되었기 때문에, 우리는 그 작업을 하지 않았다”라고 밝혔다.[9] 이 곡은 결국 2023년에 완성되어 발매되었다.[10] 대신 밴드의 프로듀서 조지 마틴이 만든 오케스트라 연주곡 〈A Beginning〉이 수록되었는데, 이 곡은 원래 《화이트 앨범》에서 〈Don't Pass Me By〉의 도입부로 사용될 예정이었다.

이전 《Anthology》 음반들과의 연결성을 위해, 클라우스 포어만이 그린 커버 이미지는 비틀즈 관련 이미지들을 콜라주 형식으로 배치하여 벽에 붙은 포스터와 음반 재킷이 벗겨지는 듯한 모습으로 디자인되었다. 또한 《Revolver》 음반 커버 일부에서는 해리슨의 머리카락 부분 안에 포어만의 최신 사진이 숨겨져 있다.
