EBML(Extensible Binary Meta Language)은 모든 종류의 데이터를 위한 일반화된 파일 형식으로, XML에 대응하는 이진 형식을 목표로 한다. 이는 XML과 유사한 태그에 데이터를 저장하기 위한 기본 프레임워크를 제공한다. EBML은 원래 Matroska 오디오/비디오 컨테이너 형식을 위한 프레임워크 언어로 설계되었다.[1][2][3]

EBML은 XML 스키마 (예: DTD)를 미리 알고 있어야 하기 때문에 XML과 동일한 방식으로 확장되지는 않는다.
