《Freak Out!》 《Absolutely Free (1967년)》

《Freak Out!》은 미국의 실험적인 록 밴드였던 마더스 오브 인벤션의 데뷔 앨범이다. 락 역사상 최초의 컨셉트 앨범 중 하나이며 최초의 더블 앨범 중 하나이다.

마더스는 보통 커버곡을 연주하던 밴드였으나 자파가 밴드에 합류하여 자작곡을 가지게 되었고 음악의 폭도 넓어졌다. 이 앨범에는 녹음 당시 유행하던 R&B로부터 시작하여 두왑, 블루스록, 오케스트라 연주뿐 아니라 아방가르드한 사운드까지 혼란스럽게 놓여있다. 이후 자파가 연주할 스타일의 원형이 대부분 담겨있는 앨범이다.

발매 당시에는 미국보다는 유럽에서 인기를 얻었고 그 인기는 다시 미국으로 이어지게 되었으나 그리 대단한 것은 아니었다. 이 앨범은 비틀즈의 역사적인 앨범 Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band의 녹음에 자극을 주었다. 1999년에 그래미 명예의 전당에 올랐고 2003년에 롤링스톤지의 역사상 가장 위대한 앨범 500에 올랐다. 2004년에 발매된 Joe's Corsage에는 이 앨범 수록곡들의 초기 버전이 담겨있고, 2006년에 발매된 The MOFO Project/Object는 이 앨범 발매 40주년을 기념하여 남겨진 오디오 다큐멘터리이다.

모든 곡은 프랭크 자파 작곡이다.

1번 LP는 짧은 길이의 락큰롤을 주로 담고 있으며 2번 LP는 잼세션과 실험적인 곡들이 주로 담겨있다.
