M4V 파일 형식은 애플이 개발한 비디오 컨테이너 형식으로 MP4 형식과 매우 유사하다. 주요 차이점은 M4V 파일이 선택적으로 DRM 복사 방지로 보호될 수 있다는 점이다. 또한, 이 확장자는 "마이크로소프트 윈도우"와 같은 운영 체제에 해당 비디오 클립이 단순히 특정 클립이 아니라 라이선스 영화에 관한 것임을 알려준다. 이는 또한 내장된 표지가 윈도우 파일 탐색기에서 올바르게 표시되도록 보장한다.

애플 아이튠즈 및 애플 퀵타임 플레이어 외에도 M4V 파일은 미디어 플레이어 클래식, K-멀티미디어 플레이어, 리얼플레이어, 줌 플레이어, VLC 미디어 플레이어, 엠플레이어, DivX 플러스 플레이어, 그리고 네로 쇼타임 (네로 멀티미디어 스위트에 포함)으로도 열고 재생할 수 있다.[1] 파이널 컷 프로 및 아이무비도 이 형식으로 내보낼 수 있다. DRM이 없는 형식은 팜 프리, 팜 픽시 스마트폰에서 사용하기 위해 웹OS 비디오 플레이어에서도 재생할 수 있다. 안드로이드 운영 체제에서도 자체 비디오 플레이어로 재생 가능하다. 퀵타임 버전 7과의 하위 호환성 때문에 핸드브레이크와 에어 비디오 서버의 기본 비디오 변환 형식으로 사용된다.[2] 파일 확장자가 ".m4v"에서 ".mp4"로 변경되면 일부 다른 비디오 플레이어도 M4V 파일을 인식하고 재생할 수 있다.[1]

핸드브레이크로 제작된 M4V 파일은 플레이스테이션 3에서도 돌비 디지털 5.1 서라운드 전체 지원으로 재생할 수 있다.
