《Manscape》는 영국의 포스트 펑크 밴드 와이어의 일곱 번째 스튜디오 음반이다. 1990년 5월 15일, 뮤트 레코드를 통해 발매되었다. 데이비드 M. 앨런이 프로듀싱했으며, 대부분의 녹음과 믹싱은 RAK 스튜디오에서 이루어졌다. 로이 스퐁이 엔지니어를 맡았으며, 다잉 아트 Ltd.에서 출판되었다.

배경

《Manscape》에서 와이어는 이전 작품들보다 일렉트로니카를 더욱 깊이 탐구했다. 베이스와 드럼은 대부분 시퀀싱되었으며, 1990년 영국 및 유럽 투어에서는 드러머 로버트 그레이 없이 라이브 공연을 진행했다.[4] 밴드는 음반에 수록된 신곡을 주로 연주했으며, 전자 악기 편성에 맞게 재작업한 일부 이전 곡도 함께 연주했다. 이 음반에는 댄스 음악의 부상과 발전이 영향을 미쳤으며, 가사는 부분적으로 컷업 기법을 사용하고 부분적으로는 간접적인 참조를 유지했다.

〈The Morning Bell〉은 영국 공립학교 제도에 관한 곡이며, 〈Small Black Reptile〉은 정치 체제에 관한 곡이다. 이 음반의 중심곡인 〈You Hung Your Lights in the Trees/A Craftsman's Touch〉는 10분이 넘는 길이로 구성되어 있다.[5] 베이시스트 그레이엄 루이스의 아내인 리브 엘반더는 〈What Do You See?〉의 가사를 공동으로 작사했다.[6]

〈Life in the Manscape〉는 RAK 스튜디오에서 음반 세션을 마친 후 월드와이드 스튜디오에서 녹음되었다. RAK 스튜디오에서 진행된 세션에서 싱글로 발매할 곡을 완성하지 못하면서 이 곡은 CD판 음반에 추가되었다. 이 곡은 음반에서 유일하게 싱글로 발매되었다.[7]

원래의 바이닐 발매판은 곡 순서가 CD판과 상당히 다르며, 〈Life in the Manscape〉, 〈Stampede〉, 〈Children of Groceries〉가 수록되지 않았다.
