《Metal Machine Music》은 미국의 록 음악가 루 리드의 다섯 번째 스튜디오 음반이다. 1975년 7월, RCA 레코드를 통해 2장짜리 음반으로 발매되었으나, 발매된 지 3주 만에 판매가 중단되었다.[11] 이전 작품들과는 크게 다른 성격을 지닌 실험적인 음반으로, 일반적인 의미의 노래나 구조적인 작곡을 전혀 담고 있지 않다. 대신 멜로디와 리듬을 배제하고, 다양한 속도로 녹음된 피드백과 디스토션을 여러 겹으로 겹쳐 구성하였다. 또한 녹음을 정방향과 역방향으로 동시에 재생하여 제작한 쿼드러포닉 사운드 버전도 제작되었다.[12]

발매 당시 약 10만 장이 판매되었으나, 곧바로 RCA 레코드 역사상 가장 많은 반품이 이루어진 음반이 되었고, 결국 유통이 중단되었다.[13] 이 음반은 리드의 음악계 명성에 큰 타격을 주었으며, 당시 평론가들로부터 혹평을 받았다. 반면 그의 이후 실험적인 음악 활동의 방향을 여는 계기가 되기도 했다. 2008년에는 리드가 울리히 크리거, 사스 칼훈과 함께 이 음반에서 영감을 받은 자유 즉흥 연주를 선보이는 프로젝트인 메탈 머신 트리오를 결성하여 공연을 진행했다. 2011년에는 리마스터 버전의 《Metal Machine Music》이 발매되었다.[14][15]

배경

《Metal Machine Music》은 리드가 모든 기타 줄을 같은 음으로 조율한 상태에서 녹음했으며[16], 이에 가장 큰 영향을 준 것은 라 몬테 영의 1960년대 중반 드론 음악 프로젝트인 시어터 오브 이터널 뮤직이었다.[16][17] 이 단체에는 존 케일, 토니 콘래드, 앵거스 맥라이즈, 마리안 자질라 등이 참여했다.[18] 케일과 맥라이즈는 모두 리드의 밴드 벨벳 언더그라운드의 멤버이기도 했지만, 맥라이즈는 밴드가 녹음을 시작하기 전에 탈퇴했다. 시어터 오브 이터널 뮤직의 순정률 화성, 지속음, 그리고 강한 음량 증폭은 이후 케일이 벨벳 언더그라운드에서 선보인 음악적 기여에도 영향을 미쳤다.

리드는 당시 록 저널리스트 레스터 뱅스와의 인터뷰에서 이안니스 크세나키스의 작품을 많이 듣고 있었다고 밝혔다. 또한 음반에 루트비히 판 베토벤의 《교향곡 3번》과 《교향곡 6번》을 연상시키는 음향적 요소를 의도적으로 삽입했으며, 이 작품을 RCA 레드 실 클래식 레이블을 통해 발매하려 했다고 주장했다. 그는 2007년 인터뷰에서도 이러한 주장을 다시 언급했다.[19]
