わ와 ワ는 일본어 음절의 하나로, 가나 문자이다. 1음절 1모라를 형성한다. 오십음도에 따르면 わ행 ア단에 위치하며 일본의 자동차 번호판에서 렌터카 기호로 사용되고 있다.

わ에 관한 여러 사항

  • わ는 'く', 'ぐ'에 후속하여 합요음을 구성할 수 있다. 이 때, 역사적 가나 표기법에서는 わ를 통상적인 글자 크기대로 표기하지만 작은 글씨 'ゎ'로 표기하기도 한다. 이 くゎ, ぐゎ 표기는 주로 역사적 가나 표기법에서 한어(漢語)를 표기하는 데에 사용되었다. 원래 이들의 음운은 /kwa/, /gwa/였으나, 근현대에 들어와 /ka/, /ga/로 변화되었기 때문에, 현대 가나 표기법에서 か, が로 바뀌었다.

그 밖에 외래어 표기에서 /kwa/, /gwa/ 음운을 가나로 적을 때는 'クヮ', 'グヮ'보다는 'クァ', 'グァ'로 적는 게 일반적이다.

  • 갸루 문자에서 'わ'로 발음하는 조사 'は'를 'ゎ'로 쓰는 경우가 있다.
    • 예: わたしは → わたしゎ
  • 일본에서 렌터 카의 넘버플레이트에 기재되는 가나 문자.
  • 도야마현의 일부 방언에서는 'わ'를 [va]에 가깝게 발음한다.
  • 라틴어에서 온 외래어에서 'v'는 고대 발음([w])을 기준으로 표기하는데, va의 경우 'ワ'보다는 'ウァ'로 적는 게 일반적이다.
