핸디캠(영어: Handycam)은 소니가 제조하여 1985년에 선보인 캠코더 브랜드이다.[1]

핸디캠은 1985년 최초의 Video8 캠코더의 명칭으로 처음 사용되었으며, 이전의 소니 베타맥스 기반 캠코더 제품군을 대체하였다. 이 이름은 당시 새로운 소형 테이프 형식 덕분에 가능해진 '손에 쥐기 쉬운(handy)' 크기를 강조하기 위한 의도였다. 이는 Video8 이전의 어깨 견착식 대형 카메라들이나 경쟁사의 소형 포맷인 VHS-C와는 대비되는 특징이었다.[2]

포맷

소니는 그 이후로도 다양한 형태의 핸디캠을 계속 생산해 왔으며[3], Video8 포맷을 발전시켜 Hi8(S-VHS급 화질)과 이후 Digital8을 생산하여 동일한 기본 포맷으로 디지털 영상을 기록하게 했다. 핸디캠 브랜드는 MiniDV, 미니DVD, MicroMV 포맷을 채택하거나 나중에는 하드 디스크 드라이브와 플래시 메모리를 사용하는 등 기록 방식이 진화함에 따라 계속 유지되고 있다.

소니 핸디캠 DCR-HC40E의 나이트샷 플러스 스위치

소니 핸디캠의 일부 플래그십 모델은 '나이트샷(NightShot)'(일부 모델에서는 '나이트샷 플러스'로 불림)이라 불리는 적외선 야간 촬영 기능을 갖추고 있다. 이 기능은 적외선 발광 다이오드와 기계적으로 센서에 탈부착되는 적외선 필터를 사용하여 완전한 어둠 속에서도 캠코더가 영상을 촬영할 수 있게 한다("나이트샷 0 럭스").[4]

메타데이터

MiniDV 테이프 방식의 핸디캠 캠코더는 테이프의 추가 메타데이터 트랙에 타임코드와 조리개, 노출 시간, 감도(dB 단위) 등 영상 기록 매개변수를 기록한다.[5]
