至少從1911年富蘭克林．希拉姆．金發表四十年農夫（Farmers of Forty Centuries）書籍時，有關作物生態學的概念和想法已經存在。金是一個先驅者，作為更定量的方法來表徵水關係和土壤物理性質的倡導者之一。[7]在20世紀20年代後期，農業和生態學的合併嘗試隨著作物生態學領域的發展而誕生。 作物生態學的主要擔心是作物最好種植。[27][7][28]
