非洲哲学

许多著名的现代思想家，如大卫·休谟、伊曼努尔·康德、托马斯·杰弗逊都认为非洲人智力上有缺陷，以致在道德和科学推理上有缺陷，无法深入思考哲学问题。20世纪之前，大多数西方人对非洲思想的评价是反面的。

不止如此，非洲哲学的观念具有刺激性，因为黑非洲最初没有本民族的书面文字以记载思辨的内容。除了埃及人和埃塞俄比亚人，多数非洲文化的书面文献仅仅是欧洲与伊斯兰思想的回声。受欧洲与北非的影响，一批当代非洲哲人开始强调书面交流，非洲文化必须超越以传统的口述材料表达的概念，以发展精密的科学及哲学。另一些人则认为非洲哲学应该从传统的语言、仪式和信仰中汲取营养。这种观念认为，非洲哲学应该是一种民族哲学，是民族学的一个组成部分。

非洲民族哲学的一个主要源头是法国哲学家吕西安·莱维-布吕尔(1857–1939)。莱维-布吕尔于1896年至1927年在索尔本任教，是那个时代最出名的民族学家之一。他认为非欧洲人民使用的主要观念、因果关系和推理模式并没有蕴含在那些遵循亚里士多德逻辑法则的学术写作之中。相反，它们是各种仪式祭典所灌输的“集体陈述”，是一种强效的、精神的体验。这些观念更多的是被感受而非被理解，神秘而缺乏理性，促成了灵与肉的协调。每个仪式的效用不仅是自然的，还是神秘的，神秘与自然实体间的联系受“分享律”的支配，与欧洲的逻辑法则完全不同。与矛盾律、排中律相比，“分享律”允许实体既是此物又是彼物，既在此处又在彼处，既处于现在又处于未来。医术、魔法、巫术、预言、与死人沟通在神秘力量驱使下是可能的。

普拉西德·坦佩利斯在《班图哲学》（1945）中试图表达传统非洲文化里隐藏的实体结构。对他来说，欧洲与非洲哲学对事物看法的主要区别在于本体论。欧洲文化中事物被认为充溢着自然物质（原子、思想、躯体），而非洲文化则认为实体是由动态的力构成。这些力量分等级的构成了神、天、地、动物、植物、无机物以及人类的力量。这些力量放大或缩小人类的各种活力，便显示出善与恶。通过医术、巫术、魔法和预言，某些人能够操控这些力量以帮助或损害他们的社群。
