A Rite of Passage adalah singel pertama dari album Black Clouds & Silver Linings. awalnya dirilis secara gratis di situs Roadrunner pada tanggal 11 Mei 2009.[1] Lagu ini menempati trek kedua pada album Black Clouds & Silver Linings. A Rite of Passage adalah satu-satunya lagu dalam album yang liriknya tidak bercerita tentang isu-isu dan pengalaman pribadi dari anggota band.[2] Keyboardis Jordan Rudess telah menyatakan bahwa "A Rite of Passage" menceritakan tentang "Freemasonry" dan organisasi rahasia.
Video klip
Video klip diterbitkan pada tanggal 8 Mei 2009, bersamaan dengan rilis dari singel. Dibanding dengan versi album, lagu ini menjadi lebih pendek hampir tiga menit, menghilangkan gitar dan keyboard solo, serta beberapa pengerjaan ulang pada riff utama.
