Parliamentary elections were held in Norway in 1856.^[1] As political parties were not officially established until 1884,^[2] all those elected were independents.^[3] The number of seats in the Storting was increased from 107 to 111.^[3] Voter turnout was 44%, although only 5% of the country's population was eligible to vote.^[4]

Results

Of the 111 seats, 42 were won by farmers, sheriffs, church singers and teachers, 39 by civil servants and 30 by people with other professions.^[5]
