Insight Publica (also styled Insight Publishers) is an Indian Malayalam-language book publisher based in Kozhikode, Kerala. The publisher has issued works on literary, social, political and cultural subjects.

In a 2016 profile of small publishing houses in Kerala, The Hindu included Insight Publica among publishers seeking out new writers and engaging with contemporary concerns. The report identified V. P. Sumesh as the editor of the publishing house.[1]

Publishing activities

Insight Publica publishes books in Malayalam. Reporting on the Malayalam publishing industry has highlighted the publisher's practice of responding rapidly to contemporary subjects. In a 2012 report, The Times of India described this approach as “real-time” publishing.[2]

V. P. Sumesh participated in discussions concerning the Malayalam publishing industry. A panel discussion published in the September 2016 Onam Special issue of India Today Malayalam included Sumesh among publishers and editors discussing royalties, book pricing, self-publishing and the relationship between publishers and Malayalam literature.[3]

Malala Yousafzai diary publication

In November 2012, Insight Publica published a Malayalam-language volume based on diary writings by Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai. The diary entries had originally appeared on the BBC News website under the pseudonym “Gul Makai”. The publication also included interviews and material concerning the situation in Pakistan's Swat Valley.[4][5]

The Hindu reported that the volume was described as possibly the first compilation of its kind in any language. The report also noted that schools were purchasing and distributing copies among students.[6]

Three Hundred Ramayanas

In 2015, Insight Publica published a Malayalam translation of A. K. Ramanujan's essay Three Hundred Ramayanas. The essay had been removed from the history syllabus of the University of Delhi in 2011 following protests. The Malayalam edition was translated by poet P. N. Gopikrishnan and titled Munnooru Ramayanangal. It included an extended foreword titled Ramanum Ramanujanum (“Rama and Ramanujan”).[7]

Awards and recognition

Pranayavum Mooladhanavum, a Malayalam translation by C. M. Rajan, was published by Insight Publica in February 2015. The book's first edition carried the ISBN 978-93-82709-78-7.[8]

Rajan received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Translation for Pranayavum Mooladhanavum in the Akademi's 2016 awards.[9]
