Matt Webb (born March 12, 1987) is a Canadian musician, best known as the lead guitarist and backing vocalist for the pop rock band, Marianas Trench. Webb also began releasing music as a solo artist in 2011. He has released one studio album, one extended play and three singles.

Early life

Webb was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada,[1] on March 12, 1987. He began playing music at a young age after his family signed him up for piano lessons.[2] He later learned how to play guitar because he thought "it looked cool."[3] He cites early influences from The Police, Tom Petty and The Foo Fighters, as well as Phoenix, The Rolling Stones and Death Cab for Cutie later on.[2] He also cites influence from his grandfather, who taught him a lot about piano.[4] As a teenager, Webb started writing and recording songs of his own before joining Marianas Trench.[5] Webb went to high school with fellow bandmate, Josh Ramsay, who were both tenors in the school choir.[6] He studied science at the University of British Columbia, while managing his music career. Webb was studying chemistry when he was approached by R.E.M.'s frontman, Michael Stipe who motivated him into doing music full-time.[4] He finished his term in university and began focusing on Marianas Trench.[7]

Webb joined Marianas Trench when the band was known as Ramsay Fiction in 2001.[8] Starting out as the group's keyboardist, he later switched to guitar that same year.[6] Since, he has become the band's primary lead guitarist, keyboardist and backing vocalist.[9] The group has released six studio albums, Fix Me (2006), Masterpiece Theatre (2009), Ever After (2011), Astoria (2015), Phantoms (2019) and Haven (2024).[8]

Solo music

In 2008, Webb branched out to work on his own solo music that he felt "not necessarily suitable" for the band.[10] He sent some material to 604 Records co-founder Jonathan Simkin to critique and after listening to it, he suggested to Webb to do some solo recording and "see what happens", which led to Webb recording his debut studio album.[3] In April 2011, Webb released his debut single, "Bad Girl".[11] The song peaked at number 30 on the Billboard Canada's Emerging Artist Chart.[12] He released his debut studio album, Coda and Jacket, on June 28, 2011.[13] The album is described as pop with influences of '80s rock and some ballads.[3]

Following a tour with Marianas Trench, Webb headed to Armoury Studios with producer and songwriter Kevin Maher to work on a new record. After three years of releasing his first studio album, he gained inspiration to write new music, from being with his band and in his personal life.[4] Comparing his first album with his new EP, he said he wanted to make a "stripped-down sounding record," focusing more on guitar.[14] A much more "cohesive" and "organic" record, as described by Webb, he also said the EP was influenced by '80s music.[15] In December 2013, he announced that he would be releasing his EP, Right Direction, on February 4, 2014, as well as announcing a headling tour that began in March, with support from Fake Shark and Jessica Lee.[16] The EP peaked at number five on the iTunes Canada Albums Chart.[17] The title track was released as the EP's lead single and is written about managing personal relationships while on the road.[18] A music video for the song premiered on MuchMusic and was featured on rotation for their Countdown.[19]

He released a collaborative Christmas single titled, "A Very Mevvy Christmas II" with Kevvy under the name Mevvy in December 2017.[20][21] On May 4, 2018, Webb released a non-album single, "Again and Again".[22] The song contains more synth sounds, compared to his previous EP.[23] In a July 2018 interview, Webb stated he had plans to begin working on another solo record.[9]
