NewSchool Learning (abbreviated NSL) was an American educational technology company based in Granger, Indiana, that developed visual themes for Moodle, an open-source learning management system. The company operated from 2007 to 2015 as a certified Moodle Partner. Several themes produced by NewSchool Learning were included in Moodle's official core distribution.[1]

History

NewSchool Learning was incorporated as NewSchool Inc. in 2007 by Patrick Malley, who served as Founder, President, and CEO until its closure.[2] The company held certified Moodle Partner status, a designation issued by Moodle HQ to organizations meeting its standards for Moodle products and services.

Over nine years of operation, the company produced just under 1,000 themes for clients worldwide.[2] The company was covered by eLearning Magazine, which noted NSL's work demonstrating that Moodle's default appearance could be substantially customized, summarized in the phrase "Moodle doesn't have to look like a Moodle."[3]

Closure

The company ceased operations in December 2015. In a January 2016 post, Malley stated that revenue had declined approximately 50% year-over-year for three consecutive years, causing expenses to exceed income in the final quarter. Malley did not identify a specific cause.[2]

Following the closure, Lead Designer and Developer John Stabinger continued related work through a successor entity, Newschool Themes.[4]

Moodle core themes

Multiple themes authored by NewSchool Learning personnel were included in Moodle's official core distribution. The following were credited in Moodle 2.5:[1]

Founder

Patrick Malley is a Michigan public school administrator. At the time of NewSchool Learning's founding in 2007, he was working as a teacher. He served concurrently as Theme Manager for Moodle from 2009 to 2011.[6] As of 2024, he serves as Superintendent of Haslett Public Schools in Haslett, Michigan.[7]
