Nico Chona is a French musician, singer-songwriter, drummer, guitarist and vocalist. He is also the co-founder and host of the YouTube channel Tone Factory.[1]

Biography

Nico was born and raised near Lyon, France, in a family of musicians.[1] His aunt, singer Shona, had a hit with the single "Elodie mon rêve" (1988, EMI Pathé-Marconi),[2] and introduced him to the drums before he was three years old.[1]

He began taking drum lessons at age 5 and went on to attend the Dante Agostini school in Lyon,[3] graduating in 2009 with a first prize by unanimous jury decision.[1] From an early age, he was also drawn to guitar. He borrowed his father's Gibson and taught himself the instrument, drawing inspiration from artists such as Billy Gibbons with ZZ Top, Eric Clapton with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and Cream, Dickey Betts with The Allman Brothers Band, and Jimi Hendrix.[1]

He began composing on guitar at age 14, primarily for his own bands, in which he played drums.[1] He also performed as a drummer in various ensembles including jazz quartets, big bands and progressive rock groups,[3] touring across France and Europe. From 2007 onwards, he began performing on stage as a guitarist and vocalist.[1]

For years, he taught drums and worked at a guitar shop, where he developed his technical and historical knowledge of the instrument.[1]

In 2017, he formed his current band, a quartet bearing his name,[4] with which he has toured extensively across Europe.[5]

Music career

He composed, wrote and produced three albums: Nico Chona & The Freshtones (2019),[6] Old Western Star (released on the Bullit Records label in 2020)[7] and Sometimes The Tears (released on the Bozeman Records label in 2025).[8] On this album, Nico Chona wrote, composed, produced, performed, and recorded all instruments and vocals.[9] The album was mixed in Los Angeles by engineer Bill Mims and mastered by Gavin Lurssen.[1][10] At the same time, he founded his own record label, Bozeman Records.[1]

He also released a double A-side single (I Was Ready, 2019) and an acoustic blues EP (Modern Delta, 2021, Bullit Records).[11] The artwork for Old Western Star and I Was Ready was created by Alain Bertrand.[12] In 2021, radio host Georges Lang played the track "Your Time" on his programme Les Nocturnes on RTL,[13] later broadcasting several tracks from the latest album Sometimes The Tears as well.[14]

In 2022, he recorded a track by Jean-Marie Ecay (Plug-In)[15] alongside American guitarist Robben Ford[16] for United Guitars Vol. 4.[17][18]

In 2026, he is scheduled to tour the United States as the opening act for British guitarist Robin Trower.[19] He is endorsed by American string manufacturer Ernie Ball and collaborates with KelT Amplification on a signature amplifier model, the "Bluebird".[20]

Media work

In 2018, he co-founded the YouTube channel Tone Factory with filmmaker Dimitri Lazardeux, where he serves as the channel's host.[21][22] The channel features content on guitar and drum equipment, interviews,[23] and coverage of music industry events such as the NAMM Show in Los Angeles and visits to instrument manufacturers like Music Man in California.[24]

He has conducted interviews for the French guitar magazine Guitar Xtreme,[1] including Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top)[25] and Rich Robinson (The Black Crowes).[26]
