Curato is the recipient of Discovery Early Career Research Award Fellowship at the Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance at the University of Canberra. The award is funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC).[5]
She joined the Centre as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Australian National University in 2011 where she worked on an ARC linkage project on the Australian Citizens' Parliament with John Dryzek and Simon Niemeyer. Before moving to Australia, she was an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of the Philippines-Diliman.
Her work has been published in academic journals including Qualitative Inquiry,[6] Policy Sciences,[7] Current Sociology,[8] European Political Science Review[9] and Acta Politica,[10] among others. Her recent work has examined the character of Rodrigo Duterte's populism.[11][12][13][14][15]
She also served as editor for several Special Issues of the Philippine Sociological Review.

Nicole Curato is widely recognized in the Philippines as a go-to analyst for television and web coverage of political affairs. She has provided expert commentary on various platforms, offering insights into the country's political landscape.[3]
In 2013, Curato was awarded as one of the Philippines' Ten Outstanding Young Men/People (TOYM) in the field of sociology, recognizing her contributions to the discipline and her role in shaping public discourse.[23]
