"Pantropiko" (lit.'Tropical') is a song recorded by Filipino girl group Bini. It was released as the second pre-release single of their debut extended play (EP), Talaarawan, on November 17, 2023.
Background and release
Following the positive reception garnered by Bini's previous single "Karera" (Race), Star Music announced "Pantropiko" as the group's second pre-release single to promote their EP Talaarawan (Diary).[1] The song, along with an accompanying performance video, was released on December 1, 2016.[2][3]
Composition
"Pantropiko" is three minutes and 45 seconds long.[4] The song is set in common time with a tempo of 95 beats per minute and written in the key of B.[5] It has been described as a "summer bubblegum pop anthem" with influences from African, Latin, and Caribbean music. The track was produced by Mat Olavides and Jumbo De Belen and composed by Olavides, De Belen, Angelika Ortiz, and Paula Patricia Chavez.[6][7]
Production
Following a challenge from dance coach Mickey Perz, Bini member Sheena created the song's choreography with the help of the group's other dance coaches, Matthew Almodovar and Reden Blanquera.[8] Filming of the song's official music video was done at the Inflatable Island Beach Club, a beach resort in Olongapo.[9]
Commercial performance
A few months after its release, "Pantropiko" became viral on TikTok, spawning countless dance challenge videos, which led to the song's rapid rise on domestic music charts.[10] On February 11, the song entered the Philippine edition of Spotify Charts' Daily Top Songs at number 173 before topping the chart on April 18.[2] With the momentum of the song's success, coupled with the release of Talaarawan on March 8, Bini became Spotify's highest-streamed female OPM artist and the Filipino P-Pop group with the most monthly listeners.[11][12]
On Billboard'sPhilippines Songs, "Pantropiko" debuted at number 17 on the issue of March 23, 2024,[13] making Bini the first P-Pop girl group[14] and the second P-Pop group after SB19 to place on the chart.[15] The song reached a new peak at number five on the issue of April 20, and along with "Salamin, Salamin" debuting at number 10,[16] Bini became the first P-Pop group to have multiple entries on the chart,[17] as well as the first P-pop group to have entries enter the chart's top 10.[18] On the chart's next issue on April 27, "Pantropiko" reached number one, marking Bini as the first P-pop group and Filipino girl group to top the chart[19][20] and the second girl group overall after Blackpink.[21] It also became the eleventh OPM song to peak atop the chart.[22] In July 2024, the song reached 100 million streams on both Spotify and YouTube Music and reached 65th in YouTube's Top 100 Daily Global Music Video chart.[23]
Reception
Despite it being released in late 2023, the song became regarded as a summer anthem in the Philippines,[2] with its theme being compared by audiences to the Lola Amour song "Raining in Manila", another weather-inspired song themed around the rainy season.[6]
Adaptations
A remake of the song performed by Bini was used in a cheeseburger advertisement by Jollibee, coinciding with the group's formal endorsement of the brand on June 17, 2024.[24]
