Talk:The Weeknd

Genres

@Twister Swagger: and @InsiderChiari: We need to reach a consensus on the genres. There have always been reverts back and forth for the genres in the past, way before the most recent edit war. I have never seen an artist's genres change so frequently. Since this has been continuous, I suggest keeping it simple with R&B, pop, and dance. None of his albums are described as hip-hop. Plus, R&B, according to its Wikipedia page, combines "rhythm and blues with elements of pop, soul, funk, hip hop, and electronic music." So R&B covers the fact that his music does contain hip-hop elements. But it is not a primary genre. I feel we should also not include subgenres in this case. He is considered a pioneer of alternative R&B, and this is covered in the lead section. Alternative R&B is obviously a subgenre of R&B, so it is okay to leave it out of the infobox. What do you all think? I think we also need to find more sources for the genres. Bowling is life (talk) 21:43, 11 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

I agree we need to reach consensus. Definitely R&B and pop first since those are his primary genres. I would be fine including hip-hop and dance, but I think it is a little biased to only include one since they are sourced the exact same way (The Variety source saying "The Weeknd is very interesting because he ticks all the boxes: pop, R&B, hip-hop, even dance"). None of his albums are described as specifically dance either. Ultimately, this source is not very explicit in applying those genres to his music as a whole, just saying he "ticks all the boxes" could mean he just uses elements of those genres, so it may be best to only list R&B and pop. Those are also the genres that could be attributed to the most sources. InsiderChiari (talk) 14:36, 12 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yeah that's why I feel we need to find more sources. It would probably be best to keep it at just R&B and pop since most of the genres his music has been described as falls under those two as subgenres or elements. Bowling is life (talk) 15:58, 12 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I agree, just R&B and pop would be sufficient. We could try to find more sources but I wouldn't be surprised if none of them describe him as anything other than an R&B or pop artist, and listing just those two genres is fine. InsiderChiari (talk) 22:54, 12 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Move page to "Abel Tesfaye"

The singer is no longer called "The Weeknd" after all the suffering he had. He confirmed that he is going to change his stage name to his real name. Gregory Khachatrian (talk) 02:16, 13 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Change "Regarded as an influential figure in popular music, he is known for his light-lyric tenor vocal range and falsetto, as well as his alternative R&B sound." to "Regarded as an influential figure in popular music and a pioneer in alternative R&B, he is known for his light-lyric tenor vocal range and falsetto."

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want made. Day Creature (talk) 13:16, 15 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Lead - Canadian

I think we should change part of the lead from ‘Canadian’ to ‘Ethiopian-Canadian’. CG7000 (talk) 20:24, 28 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
