簡棘龍屬（學名：Haplocanthosaurus）是蜥腳下目的一屬恐龍，生活於侏羅紀晚期（啟莫里階至提通階）的北美洲，距今約1億5500萬年至1億5200萬年前^[1]。

簡棘龍目前包含兩個種：原簡棘龍（H. priscus）、H. delfsi，目前都只發現不完整的化石，都是部份骨骼，缺乏頭顱骨。第一個化石是由一個名為Edwin Delfs的學生發現的，發現於科羅拉多州的莫里遜組。簡棘龍與西龍、原雷龍、異特龍的化石都發現於莫里遜組的最下層^[2]。

概述

莫里遜組經常發現大型蜥腳類恐龍的化石，大部分物種的身長可超過20公尺；而簡棘龍的身長估計為14.8公尺，體重估計值為12.8公噸，與莫里遜組的其他蜥腳類恐龍相比，身長與體型較小^[2]^[3]。

標本

目前已經發現四個簡棘龍的化石，發現於科羅拉多州與懷俄明州，三個屬於原簡棘龍，一個屬於H. delfsi，都缺乏頭顱骨。其中只有H. delfsi的標本是成年個體，也是最完整的標本。在克里夫蘭自然史博物館有一個H. delfsi的骨架模型，採尾巴拖曳在地面的姿勢，頭骨則是參考其他蜥腳類恐龍而建立的。莫里遜組的簡棘龍化石，發現於第1、第2、以及第4地層帶^[4]。

命名

在1903年，約翰·貝爾·海徹爾（John Bell Hatcher）將Edwin Delfs發現的化石，命名為新屬簡棘龍（Haplocanthus），意為「單一的棘」，意指每節脊椎的單一神經棘；模式種是原簡棘龍（H. priscus）。就在在同一年，海徹爾發現棘魚綱的一屬已使用這個名稱，因此將簡棘龍的屬名從Haplocanthus改為Haplocanthosaurus，意為「具有單棘的蜥蜴」^[5]。

但實際上，這個由路易士·阿格西（Louis Agassiz）在1845年命名的棘魚類，屬名是Haplacanthus，而非Haplocanthus，所以並沒有命名優先權的問題。長期以來，簡棘龍的兩個屬名共同存在。直到近年，國際動物命名委員會作出決議，正式將簡棘龍的屬名從Haplocanthus改為Haplocanthosaurus。

簡棘龍的第二個種是戴氏簡棘龍（H. delfsi），是在1988年由J.S. McIntosh與M. Williams敘述、命名；種名是以發現首個簡棘龍化石的Edwin Delfs為名。

分類

簡棘龍最初被認為類似鯨龍，而被歸類於鯨龍科。在1999年，何塞·波拿巴（José Bonaparte）提出簡棘龍有許多獨特特徵，因此將簡棘龍歸類於簡棘龍科（Haplocanthosauridae），只包含簡棘龍屬^[6]。

就目前為止的系統發生學研究，仍無法確定簡棘龍與其他蜥腳類恐龍的演化關係。目前的版本包含：比新蜥腳類還原始的物種^[7]、原始大鼻龍類恐龍，與圓頂龍、腕龍科的祖先是近親^[8]、原始梁龍超科，較其中的雷巴齊斯龍科原始^[9]。

在2005年，德恩·奈許（Darren Naish）與麥可·泰勒（Michael P. Taylor）在他們的梁龍超科研究中，重新整理各種版本的簡棘龍演化位置^[10]。以下圖表是根據奈許、泰勒的2005年研究：
