Burra

Broen der forbinder East og West Burra.

Burra (Oldnordisk: Barrey[1]) er fællesbetegnelsen for to af Shetlandsøerne, West (753 indbyggere) og East Burra (66 indbyggere), som er forbundet med hinanden via en bro og med Shetland Mainland via Trondra.

Derudover var Burra et gammelt sogn, der omfattede mindre øer som South Havra, Little Havra, Papa og tidevandsøen West Head of Papa. Sognet Burra blev i 1891 indlemmet i sognet Lerwick, sammen med Quarff og Gulberwick. Det eksisterer fortsat som et Quoad sacra parish under Church of Scotland.

Den form, der bruges i Orkneyinga saga, er "Barrey". Collins Encyclopedia of Scotland antyder, at navnet er en forvanskning af Borgarey, hvilket betyder "øen med broch".[2] Stednavnet Brough på West Burra understøtter denne tolkning, og en nærliggende høj kan have været en broch, hvorfra sten blev fjernet for at bygge molen ved Scalloway.[3]
