Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. states/state templates lists and displays all 50 U.S. state (and additional other) templates. I have never seen "East, NV" on any map, and have never heard of this before. I have seen many, many maps of the state and have been to several places, but East??? The listing in the Settlements section has been so successful in including small towns that the metro areas don't stand out. I added a Metro Areas group based on Nevada's three entries in Table of United States Metropolitan Statistical Areas. I used a format similar to the neighboring Template:California since it had already dealt with this.

Issues I considered:

• Do we use MSAs, CSAs or an arbitrary list? MSAs are a rather short list in Nevada but the most objective list of the largest cities. CSAs alone wouldn't make sense because Carson City would drop off the list. But if we wanted to use a combination of MSAs and CSAs, add Pahrump to Las Vegas-Paradise and Fernley to Reno-Sparks. But I don't think that makes as much sense. So I didn't do that.
• The Las Vegas Valley is already listed in regions. I decide it's appropriate to allow the duplication and leave it there. Nevada is often divided (by phone area codes or by regions of many organizations which operate in the state) into Las Vegas and the rest of the state. So while such duplication might not make sense in other navboxes, in Nevada's case it needs to be listed in the regions too.
• I didn't remove the duplicate entries for the MSA primary cities from the Settlements section. This could go either way. I decided that a reader looking at these groups could think about any one of them first for any of the ways to get to the metro area primary cities. So for now I'm leaving the duplicates in the Settlements section as-is.

That should help add to the navigability of the template. A change was made to Template:Nevada which was apparently intended to simplify the code, but changed its behavior. Previously, the default behavior was to autocollapse when included and expanded when not included. The new change made it just default to expanded in all cases. It looks wrong on pages like Black Rock Desert, Lake Tahoe, Great Basin and Sierra Nevada which have multiple templates that used to autocollapse. All of a sudden Template:Nevada is expanded while the others remain collapsed by default as they should. I'm going to undo the change. Go ahead and try again at simplifying it - but try to make sure this side effect doesn't happen in the final revision. The list of cities was fairly large and unwieldy and included numerous articles that are one line stubs. I've condensed the list down to the largest 15 cities and communities. These 15, and all the other communities in the state are also found in the appropriate county navigation templates. If anyone has comments or anything on this edit, please let me know. I think that's fine, with the provision that we'll probably add more cities and towns back to the list. It's basically gone from one extreme to the other. Though I live in California, I have family in Nevada and have traveled often in the state. In Nevada, there are vast stretches where small towns are the only things out there. Therefore, they are relevant to coverage of Nevada. We might want to consider a baseline of adding towns which are county seats and notable/usable stops along highways back to the list. What do you think? I'd suggest that there be a population standard used as a cutoff, this is the common method of what cities to include or not include in other state templates. My main concern was that the list of cities was chopped way too short. It was too long before. I didn't want to discard another volunteer's work - you have addressed that by reinstating and updating the county settlement templates. Good work. But I still think the list on the Nevada template went from one extreme to the other (too much to too little). The purpose of the template is to facilitate navigation. We can be more flexible than that. And even choosing the top 15 is an arbitrary threshold. An arbitrary population threshold is probably not better than an arbitrary list of cities in a state where small towns can be relatively significant across vast stretches of desert. That's relevant to navigability of Nevada info. So where is the ranking of Nevada cities/towns by population? I'd like to look at what degree of correlation may exist between a list by population and a list of the county seats, and what happens if we try to find a population threshold which includes them. If we don't want to be arbitrary, let's look at those different lists first, and figure out a more meaningful threshold. If we're just making an arbitrary threshold, then let's also add the county seats and usable highway stops back in. Either approach will keep it relevant. Alright, I've gone back and added all county seats and some more large communities. I basically looked at places that are cities, towns, and cdps, as most other articles are one liners and should not be linked directly from the state template. Unfortunately, there is not a good population threshold that includes county seats as the smallest is Goldfield, the seat of Esmeralda County with a population of 440. Anyway, the newest additions I made certainly isn't meant to be the end all, be all, so go ahead and review the list and let me know your thoughts. OK, I reviewed the list as suggested and added some more. Your revision was excellent - so there weren't many more I thought needed to be added. I added towns from the List of cities in Nevada which have something notable about them (such as a landmark or highway junction) and generally 1000+ population with a few exceptions for those with more notable landmarks. i.e. Alamo for its meteor impact site, Baker for Great Basin National Park, Gerlach for the Black Rock Desert and Rachel for Area 51/UFO enthusiasts (included regardless of a personal bias against that topic). Incline Village, Primm, Stateline and West Wendover were added as high-rise casino border towns which symbolize Nevada to travelers entering via those highways. Austin is a US50 highway junction town with history as a larger mining town. Amargosa Valley, Beatty and Carlin, among others already listed, are highway junctions in open stretches with 1000+ population. Is there a particular reason why this template is silver/gray? Wouldn't it be better to just go with the default used by {{navbox}} to avoid having a rainbow at the bottom of the page when this navbox is next to another one and per WP:ACCESSIBILITY? Please let me know if there is a strong reason to have it a particular color. I noticed this was attempted recently, but was reverted, so I thought I would be proactive and start a thread here to avoid an edit war. Thanks!
