中でも移調の限られた旋法(M.T.L.)は広く知られ、晩年まで彼の特徴的な雰囲気を形づくる一つの要素として様々に使用されている。わが音楽語法を残した後、前衛の時代に入っても独自の探求は継続し、「クロノクロミー」、「天の都市の色彩」では理論の複雑化が頂点に達した。メシアン本人は「わが音楽語法の続編」を「リズムの教程」として簡易なブックレットの形で出版する意向を強く望んだが、その望みが果たされることはなかった。メシアンの死後、残された遺稿集を全て出版する計画が始まり、全7巻の遺稿集「リズムと色と鳥類学の概論 Traité de rythme, de couleur et d'ornithologie」がLeduc社より出版された。個人の残した音楽理論教程としてはシャルル・ケクランを優に凌いでいる。
