邦板牙語的名稱源於「邦板」(pampang,意思即是「河岸」。在16世紀西班牙人到達菲律賓以前,人們對這種語言可以說沒有幾多認識。
到了18世紀,Diego Bergaño神父寫了兩本有關這種語言的著作,分別為Vocabulario de la lengua Pampanga[2] 及Arte de la lengua Pampanga,是邦板牙語研究的經典。
